(HALIFAX, N.S.) - In a game that went the distance, Saint Mary's Michael Curtis (Georgetown, Ont.) scored the only goal of a 10-round shootout as the Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 4-3 at the Halifax Forum Friday night.

Curtis's winning goal earned him Subway player of the game honours.

To open the game, the X-Men got on the board first, when Michael Kirkpatrick (North Sydney, N.S.) scored at 14:43 to give the X-Men a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies answered back, when second-year forward Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, N.S.) notched a power play marker at 16:11 to tie the game at 1-1 after the first period.

Saint Mary's took the lead in the second, when Francis Menard (Embrun, Ont.) tallied at 8:10 to make the score 2-1. The Huskies extended their lead when third-year defenceman Kyle Pereira (Brampton, Ont.) scored at 11:30 to give Saint Mary's a 3-1 lead to end the second.

In the third, the X-Men got to within one when Cole Grbavac (Calgary, Alta.) tallied on the power play at 3:01 to make it 3-2. The X-Men tied things up at three apiece, when Blake Gal (Lethbridge, Alta.) scored on the power play at 13:34 regulation time.

Fans were treated to an exciting overtime period, but both the Huskies and X-Men were unable to score, forcing a shootout.

After 10 shooters aside, Michael Curtis scored the winner to give the Huskies a 4-2 win over the X-Men.

The X-Men outshot the Huskies 39-36 on the night. Anthony Peters (Blyth, Ont.) made 36 saves to get the win in net for the Huskies and Drew Owsley (Lethbridge, Alta.) stopped 33 shots for the X-Men.

Both teams have qualified for the playoffs, but their opponents and dates for their first games are still to be determined.
