No. 2-ranked Huskies take down Axemen 2-1 in overtime

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - In a game that went to overtime, Stephen Johnston (Guelph, Ont.) scored the winning goal 3:46 into the extra frame to give the CIS No. 2-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies a 2-1 win over the No. 5-ranked Acadia Axemen Friday night at the Halifax Forum.

The game was played before a crowd of 780.

Johnston's goal was assisted by Matt Tipoff (Toronto, Ont.) and Cameron Wind (Barrie, Ont.). Johnston's clutch marker earned him Subway player of the game honours.

In a tight first period, there was no score at the end of 20 minutes of play.

In the second, Remy Giftopoulos (Ancaster, Ont.) opened the scoring at 10:19 on the power play for Acadia to give them a 1-0 lead.  

The Huskies' Francis Menard (Embrun, Ont.) answered back for at 15:00 to tie the game at 1-1 after 40 minutes to end the second period.

The score remained tied at one apiece at the end of the third forcing the game into overtime. Saint Mary's assists went to Steven Beyers (Orangeville, Ont.) and Ben Duffy (Lower Sackville, N.S.). Acadia assists went to Travis Gibbons (London, Ont.) and Zachary Franko (Winnipeg, Man,).

Overall shots went to Acadia who outshot the Huskies 26-22.  In the net for the Huskies, Anthony Peters (Blyth, Ont.) made 25 saves for the win and Brandon Glover (Victoria, B.C.) stopped 20 shots in goal for Acadia.

This was each team's last game before the holiday break. The Huskies don't play again until Jan. 3, when they travel to Antigonish to meet the X-Men for a 7 p.m. game  

The Axemen return from the break on the 3rd at 7 p.m. as well against the Dalhousie Tigers at the Forum.
