(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) - The UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-1 on Wednesday to take Game 1 of the Atlantic University Sport men's hockey playoff quarterfinal series.
UPEI's Chris Desousa, with an assist from Cole MacMillan, opened the scoring 7:40 into the first period.
Less than two minutes later, Mason Wilgosh extended the Panthers lead to two. Helpers came from Cody McNaughton and Alex Wall.
Stephen Johnston put the Huskies on the board 7:53 into the second with assists coming from Matt Tipoff and Gerard Grant.
Dana Fraser, with helpers coming from Alex Wall and Tyler Brown, added an insurance goal at 17:40 of the second period.
The third period was scoreless.
Panthers goalie Wayne Savage faced 29 shots while Huskies goalie Anthony Peters faced 23.
Game 2 of the best 2-of-3 quarterfinal will be played Friday at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum. Game 3, if needed, will be held back in Charlottetown on Sunday at 7 p.m.
