V-Reds top Moncton 4-2

(MONCTON, N.B.) - The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (9-7-0) gave up three unanswered goals in the second and third periods to fall 4-2 to the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (14-3-1) in an Atlantic University Sport men's hockey game played Sunday evening at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena in front of 760 spectators.

Danny Chiasson (from Steve Lebel and Pierre Durepos), followed by Lebel (from Chiasson and Maxime Pilon), led the Moncton attack with a goal and an assit each. Lebel's goal, his first in university play 3:55 into the second period, gave his team a 2-1 lead.

Cameron Critchelow led the Varsity Reds offense with two goals, while Taylor MacDougall and Cam Braes added singles. Adrien Lemay faced 28 shots in a losing cause while Charles Lavigne faced 21 for the Varsity Reds.

"We played well and we gave them a game," said Moncton coach Serge Bourgeois. "They have a better defense and we could not shoot on goal as often. We did not change anything when we led 2-1. We kept playing well defensively and we took chances with no success."

Moncton will travel to Charlottetown the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 15 for their first game against the UPEI Panthers, a game orginally scheduled for Nov. 20 but postponed due to weather.

The AUS second place Varsity Reds next take to the ice Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. when they host the top-ranked Acadia Axemen.
