Axemen defeat Tigers to move into first place

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The CIS No. 4-ranked Acadia Axemen extended their winning streak to nine games with a 4-2 road win over the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax on Friday night.

The Tigers (1-9-1), who had just won their first game of the season on Wednesday, are left searching for answers after letting yet another game slip away. Acadia now sita at 10-1-0, good enough for first place in the AUS standings.

Neither team could find their groove on the power-play, with the Axemen going 1-of-8 while the Tigers were held scoreless on six chances.

Alex Beaton opened the scoring for Acadia just four minutes into the game, off a pass from Scott Trask.

In the final minute of the first period Chris Ivanko cut past the Axemen's defense and fired a shot on net, and after a scrum around the net, Fabian Walsh buried the puck past Brandon Glover and the game was tied going into the first intermission.

Acadia poured on the shots in the second. An eventual tic-tac-toe play finished by Chris Owens put the Axemen up 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Dalhousie came back in the third period with a sense of urgency and Brett Therbegre sniped one from a tough angle three minutes.

Acadia then showed why they're the top team in the AUS as Owens tipped a point shot past Wendell Vye to put the Axemen up 3-2 with ten minutes left to go, and the Axemen never looked back.

Acadia captain and AUS scoring leader Liam Heelis buried a shot top shelf on a 2 on 0 breakaway with 34 second left to seal the deal for Acadia, and the Axemen went on to win 4-2.

The Tigers will look to get back on track when they take on the Saint Mary's Huskies on November 27th. The Axemen will head to Antigonish next Saturday night to take on the X-Men.
