X-Men sweep opening weekend

The defending AUS champion StFX X-Men swept the UNB Reds in the opening weekend of AUS men's basketball action, earning four points.

The X-Men defeated the Reds 90-86 Friday night as Dondre Reddick earned player of the game honours, finishing with 25 points on the night. Marcus Barnes was the Reds player of the game, scoring a game-high 26 points.

StFX then played to a 94-74 win over the UNB Reds on Coach K Court on Saturday afternoon. Deon Ejim finished as top scorer for the X-Men, dropping 20 points including four triples, and adding nine rebounds and two assists as he picked up player of the game honours. Koat Thomas added 15 points for the X-Men, including four rebounds. Reese Zorogole finished with 19 points while going 4-for-4 from the three-point line, while Marcus Barnes added 14 points, along with five rebounds.

Saint Mary's guards Jayrell Diggs and Jonas Maerz combined for 37 points, as the Huskies came back from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Acadia Axemen 69-63 on Thursday night. Diggs was named Player of the Game after scoring 13 of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter. Maerz chipped in 17 points, including 4/5 shooting from beyond the arc. The Axemen were paced by Glen Cox, who scored 26 points and added five rebounds, while forward Thomas MacDonald scored seven points and added nine rebounds.

Acadia bounced back Saturday, holding on to earn a 97-92 overtime win over the Huskies. Gabe Davignon scored six of his team-leading 23 points in overtime to help Acadia to their victory. Marc-Denault Gabriel led the Saint Mary's offence with a game-high 24 points, also picking up the only double-double in the game.

The Cape Breton Capers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers Friday night 82-67 at the Dalplex. Tyson Cato scored 20 points, adding 10 rebounds for the double-double in the win, while Gabe Damey let Dalhousie with a game-high 23 points. 

The Tigers bounced back Saturday, earning a 92-63 win over the Capers. The Tigers Spencer Riar was named player of the match, scoring 22 of the Tigers 92 points. 

The Memorial Sea-Hawks opened up their first home game facing the UPEI Panthers, where they came out on top after a close game with a final score of 79-76. Emanuel Ring finished with 23 points for the Sea-Hawks, while Nick Tuff had 19 and  Flynn Boardman-Raffet finished with 11. The top scorer of the game was UPEI's #1 Kamari Scott, getting a total of 24 points. 

The Panthers and Sea-Hawks split their games, as the Panthers bounced back to earn a 72-61 win in St. John's. Jace Colley was the top-scoring player of the game with 27 points for UPEI, while Emanuel Ring was Memorial's leading scorer with 20 points.
