Capers knock off rival X-Men at home

(SYNDEY, N.S.) - After giving up a 12-point lead and losing by one against StFX at the Oland Centre two weeks ago, the Cape Breton University Capers got their revenge on Tuesday night in their own house. The Capers followed up the women's victory with a 83-65 win over their arch rival.

AJ Geugjes  came off of the bench to lead a balanced Capers attack with 18 points on 80 per cent shooting, to go along with five rebounds. Geugjes had the opportunity to get more playing time because fellow big man, Meschack Lufile was in foul trouble throughout the game. However, Lufile was still able to put up 15 points without missing a shot from the field in his limited minutes.

Jordan Tyrell scored a game-high 25 points for the X-Men in the losing effort.

Meanwhile, Roydell Clarke provided a spark off the bench for a struggling StFX offence with 16 points on Tuesday night.

The Capers got off to a tremendous start in front off a packed and rowdy Sullivan Fieldhouse crowd.

CBU led by 16 at halftime and extended their lead to as much as 28 in the second half.

A good fourth quarter from the X-Men brought the score closer. However, the Capers were dominant for the majority of the game.

Offensively, CBU moved the ball well and didn't decline when Lufile was not on the floor.

The big difference for the Capers was their defensive performance. Ranked near the bottom of the CIS in points per game allowed prior to the game, the Capers held a team to under 70 points for the second consecutive game.

Next up for CBU is a match up with the CIS No. 9-ranked UNB Varsity Reds in New Brunswick on Friday.

The Capers defeated UNB at Sullivan Fieldhouse before Christmas by a score of 93-89. Cape Breton is undefeated at home, but have just one win on the road, and they will look to improve that record at UNB this Friday.

The X-Men will host the Acadia Axemen this Friday in Antigonish. Both squads sit tied with eight points in the AUS standings, battling it out for the sixth and final playoffs spot.
