Huskies cruise to 78-60 win over Tigers

(HALIFAX, N.S.) The Saint Mary's Huskies used a blistering first quarter run to cruise to a 78-60 win over the Dalhousie Tigers in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action Friday night.

Three-point baskets from the Huskies' Marquis Clayton and Boyd Vassell signalled a fast start for the Huskies, who marched out to an 11-0 lead with 3:02 into the game.

The last seven minutes of the quarter went back and forth with the score at the end of the quarter 23-15 for Saint Mary's.

The Huskies took a 39-29 halftime lead and extended it to 14 points after 30 minutes of action, 58-44.

Kashrell Lawrence scored Dal's first five points to open the fourth quarter before a 9-0 run by Saint Mary's with 6:33 left in the game had it 70-49.

The Tigers would go on to outscore Saint Mary's 11-8 to end the game with Dal's Lawrence leading all scorers' with 20 points in 10 minutes coming off the bench.

John Traboulsi added eight points for the Tigers, who fall to 2-9 on the year.

Clayton paced the Huskies with 15 points and five assists while Terrence Taylor and Vassell each had 12 points.

Riley Halpin and Jeremy McAvoy added 10 points apiece for Saint Mary's while Brian Rouse had six points.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Harry Ezenibe with five points, Travis Adams with four points, Ryan Augustine had three points and Mitch Harrison with a free throw.

For the game, Saint Mary's shot 46.8 per cent from the floor (29-62) compared to Dal's 38.2 per cent (21-55).

Dal shot 5-15 from three-point land (33.3 per cent) compared to Saint Mary's 4-20 (20 per cent). The Tigers held a rebound advantage, 38-34 and scored more bench points, 34-23 over the Huskies.

Saint Mary's had tougher points inside the paint and held a 34-22 scoring advantage. They improve to 9-4 in AUS play.

The Huskies return to action Tuesday, Jan. 28 when they host Acadia University at 6 p.m. in a game rescheduled from Jan. 22.

The Tigers will host the Cape Breton Capers tonight at 8 p.m. in a four-point game.
