Gaiters Loney Bowl Bound with 23-5 victory over the Mounties

In AUS Subway semi-final football action, the Bishop's Gaiters played to a 23-5 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, allowing them to earn a spot in next weekend's Loney Bowl against the StFX X-Men.

The visiting Gaiters opened the scoring with 6 minutes gone in the 1st quarter. After the Mounties failed to convert on a 3rd and short from their own 36-yard line on their first possession of the game, the Gaiters were given a short field to start. After moving inside the red zone Mathe Mitayango rushed from 15 yards out for the touchdown. 

The game was held at 7-0 for the rest of the 1st quarter and most of the 2nd quarter until the Mounties offense came to life and put together a drive to ignite the home crowd. After the Mounties moved down inside the Bishop's 25-yard line, Jake Kelly picked off a Julian Wytinck pass and rolled 86 yards the other way for the major. This brought the score to 14-0 at halftime. 

The Mounties started quick in the 3rd quarter as Aidan O'Neal returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half 76 yards back to the Bishop's 27-yard line. This led to a Mounties field goal as James Parker connected from 34 yards to cut the lead to 14-3. 

After trading possessions for most of the 3rd quarter the Mounties found themselves backed up in their own end with 4 mins left and elected to concede a safety to run the score to 16-3.

Bishop's would add to their lead with 8 minutes remaining in the game when Louis-Philippe Gregoire took a screen pass and sprinted 35 yards for the end zone. This gave the Gaiters a 23-3 to lead with time winding down.

Bishop's would concede a safety with 3 minutes remaining to bring the score to 23-5.

Mason McGriskin was 12 of 21 for 208 yards with 1 touchdown for the Gaiters. Julian Wytinck was 20 of 34 for 146 yards for the Mounties.

Gregoire led the Gaiters with 76 yards rushing on 18 attempts. Aidan O'Neal had 35 rush yards on 4 carries to lead the Mounties. 

Lucas Cormier led the Mounties with 7.5 tackles including 1 sack. 

The Bishop's Gaiters will now travel to StFX to play the X-Men in the 2021 Subway AUS Loney Bowl on Saturday, November 20th.
