St. John's, NL—Memorial suffered their first home defeat of the season with an 80-64 setback to the 1st place visitors from UPEI. Previously 6-0 at the friendly confines of the Field House, the Sea-Hawks ran into a red-hot Panthers squad that as a team shot 48.3% from the floor on this night.
Of particular importance was UPEI's No 11, Lauren Rainford, whose 30-point performance earned her Subway player of the game honors. Top scorer on the night, however, was Memorial's Alana Short, who sank an impressive 31 points and added 10 boards. Short continues to produce all-star level performances each week, which is an encouraging sign as the playoffs loom.
The Sea-Hawks were quite competitive through first 3 and half quarters, though they never led, the lead remained single digits. It was the last 5 minutes, however, when the Panthers finally pulled away, finishing the game on a 15-6 run to secure victory.
Carolina Del Santo's 19 rebounds and 5 assists stand out on the stat line. UPEI also managed 23 points off the bench, almost double the Memorial's 12.
The Hawks will seek to improve their free throw shooting tomorrow, having left 10 points on the charity stripe in the series opener. Coach English's troops will grab some Subway, rest up, and return tomorrow ready for another spirited effort. Sunday's regular season finale goes 1 p.m. at the Field House.
