Panthers bounce back with 72-61 win over Memorial
The Memorial Sea-Hawks battled the UPEI Panthers to continue the home opening weekend at MUN. UPEI Panthers ended up winning the game with a final score of 72-61 after a close match up between the two teams.
ST. JOHN'S, NL—The Memorial Sea-Hawks battled the UPEI Panthers to continue the home opening weekend at MUN. UPEI Panthers ended up winning the game with a final score of 72-61 after a close match up between the two teams.
UPEI opened up the game winning the tipoff to bring their team to the board first with #3 Jace Colley. Memorial's #14 Nick Tuff showed off his skills early on capturing a 3 pointer putting the Sea-Hawks on the score board. Sea-Hawks #11 Flynn Boardman-Raffet with an impressive tip into the net continuing their lead. The quarter progressed with turnovers on both sides of the court however Memorial was able to find the back of the net just a few more times to end the quarter with a score of 22-17 in favour of the Sea-Hawks.
The second quarter was opened up by the Sea-Hawks having possession but they were unable to finish. Panthers took over and #5 Cameron Brown showed off an impressive slam dunk to start off scoring for the quarter. Memorial's #12 Josh Francis took that and retaliated with a slam dunk of his end. Throughout the 2nd both teams showed up all around, creating a back and forth battle between the Sea-Hawks and Panthers. The Panthers came out of the first half leading with a score of 35-34.
UPEI #3 Jace Colley was the top scorer for the first half with 13 points. #1 Kamari Scott not far behind with 11 points for himself. Memorial's #13 Emanuel Ring was finding the net the most on their side during the first half with 9 points. #14 Nick Tuff was able to get himself 8 points and #11 Flynn Boardman-Raffet with 7 points.
#1 Kamari Scott for the Panthers began the scoring for the 3rd quarter with a 2 point jump shot along with a 1 on 1 layup continuing UPEI's lead. #3 for the Panthers, Jace Colley finding himself on the foul line, successfully finishing his shots allowing the Panthers to continue climbing the board leaving the Sea-Hawks behind. An intense quarter with lots of fast, chaotic play the Panthers continue to lead the Sea-Hawks 52-46.
With both teams playing a very physical game, baskets have been sparse. However #13 Emanuel Ring has been able to find the net the most points within the first few minutes of the quarter. Along with an intense block against the Panthers at 4 minutes in followed by a 3 pointer by #11 Flynn Boardman-Raffet in attempt to close the bridge between the two teams. After a very physical and intense end to the game the UPEI Panthers ended up on top with a final score of 72-61.
UPEI #3 Jace Colley was the top scoring player of the game with 27 points. Following their lead was #1 Kamari Scott capturing 19 points. On Memorial's side #13 Emanuel Ring was their lead scorer with 20 points. Additionally, #14 Nick Tuff was able to get his team 15 points and #11 Flynn Boardman-Raffet followed suit with 12 points.
