Axewomen & Sea-Hawks split weekend series

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Memorial Sea-Hawks snapped the Acadia Axewomen's four game winning streak with a three set sweep in the last of a two-match weekend series.

Maiya Westwood, named the Subway Player of the Game, "quarterbacked" the win with 19 sets and contributed defensively with 12 digs.

The Sea-Hawks came out of the starting blocks strong, posting a 7-1 lead against the Axewomen in the first set. Acadia worked back from the deficit to tie the game at 15 but never took the lead during the opening game. Attack and service errors marred the Axewomen's play as Memorial captured the first set 25-23.

The Axewomen held onto the lead in the second game by only one point until a kill by Kiersten Fey tied the game at 12. The Sea-Hawks would gain the advantage following the next rally and hold onto the lead until the final 25-19 win.

Leading the match 2-0, Memorial trailed the Axewomen early in the eventual final set. Behind by as much as five (13-18), the Sea-Hawks gained ground with a combination of Acadia attack errors and kills by Jill Snow, Sarah Dawe and Maiya Westwood's tying kill at 21-21. Snow and Braxton Fenter would combine in the closing to hand Acadia a 22-25 loss.

Jill Snow led the Sea-Hawks with 10 kills and eight digs. Acadia's Sarah Ross posted a game high 13 kills with seven attack errors. Axewoman Marrisa Chinm who was named the Acadia Subway Player of the game, had an balanced game with four kills, one service ace and four digs.

Memorial improves to 6-5 and moves into a second place tied with Acadia who drop to 5-8. The Sea-Hawks have three games in hand.  Acadia will face the Saint Mary's Huskies this Wednesday night in Halifax while Memorial hosts UNB next weekend beginning on Friday night.
