SACKVILLE, NB—The Mount Allison Mounties came close at home on Wednesday night, eventually dropping a 2-1 decision to the visiting UPEI Panthers.
Neither team scored in the first period, a period that featured 10 shots by the Panthers and 8 shots by the Mounties. The best chances of the period came late on a Mounties powerplay where they had a few quality chances in tight but couldn't beat Panthers goalie Sasha Weekes.
Subway Player of the Game Sophie Bujold gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead 7:38 into the 2nd period on a play assisted by Mireille Martin and Ruby Loughton.
The Mounties would even the score 15 minutes into the 2nd period when senior Julia Aurora banged in a rebound around the Panthers net. Lucy Newman and Jordyn Clark drew assists on the equalizer.
The Panthers scored the eventual game winner just 50 seconds into the 3rd period when Taylor Gillis found herself open in the slot and buried one past Mounties goalie Bianca Zak.
Zak stopped 29 of 31 shots she faced in goal for the Mounties. Weekes kicked away 25 of 26 shots in the Panthers net.
The Panthers return home for their final game of the first semester where they'll take on the Saint Mary's Huskies Sunday at 3 p.m.
