Axewomen sweep Sea-Hawks, sit atop AUS standings
ST. JOHN'S - The Memorial Sea-Hawks fell to the Acadia Axewomen in the second game out of a two-game series in three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-12.
 
The Axewomen gained the first six points of the set pushing Memorial into an early timeout. The Sea-Hawks gained their first point of the match off a service error immediately after the timeout. The Sea-Hawks then completed their first kill of the game by Lydia Grawer to make the score 9-3. The Axewomen continued to grow their lead from multiple errors from the Sea-Hawks. Midway through the set, the Axewomen held a comfortable 8-point lead at 15-7 to force the Sea-Hawks into another timeout.
 
Acadia continued to climb the board after the timeout. Multiple late kills for Acadia from across the board led them to gain the set 25-11.
 
Kills from all across the Axewomen roster, led by Erica Fisher allowed them to climb to a 13-4 lead in the second set. Midway through the set, the teams began to trade points but the Axewomen kept a comfortable lead. Late into the set, Alexia Lemay-Evans completed multiple kills to help push her team closer to gaining the set. They gained the set 25-13 off a kill by Allison Van Zeumeren.
 
The third set was opened by Courtney Hodder from the Sea-Hawks who unleashed a strong kill. Lemay-Evans was quick to take back the point with a kill of her own. Early in the set, the teams kept the score close until Acadia began to pull ahead at 7-4. Nearing the end of the set the Axewomen gained five consecutive points with the help of a kill from Eve Collombin and a block
from Fisher and Van Zeumeren to give them game point. Acadia took the final set 25-12 off a kill by Leah Weatherhead.
 
Lemay-Evans led the game with 12 successful kills contributing to 12 points to help her team take the game. Behind her was Sea-Hawks Courtney Hodder who completed eight kills. Jenna Lake had the most digs of the game with six.
 
The Sea-Hawks will face the Dalhousie Tigers next on the road on February 1 at 6:00 p.m. AST to start a two-game series.
 
The Acadia Axe-Women will play the UNB Reds at home on February 9 at 7:00 p.m. AST.
