REDS Hold Off Huskies
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) opened the scoring for the REDS with an early goal in the first period at 1:43. It was Scott's AUS-leading 12th goal of the season.
Shortly after, the Huskies responded with a corner shot by Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) to even the score at 3:36.
In the second period, the REDS regained the lead, with Marisa Valla (St. Catharines, ON) finding the back of the net at 9:22.
UNB would carry that slim lead the rest of the way.
The game was delayed for about five minutes mid-way through the third period when Huskies' forward Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON) was injured in a collision. Cant was tended to on the ice before being helped to the dressing room.
Despite the visiting team having opportunities, the REDS held on for the win.
Hannah LeClair (Norboro, PE) made 34 saves for the win and was named Tim Hortons Player of the Game. Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) made 18 saves in the Huskies net.
Valla and LeClair were among five seniors honoured by the REDS ahead of the game. Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON), Olivia Eustace (Riverview, NB), and Josie Chisholm (Antigonish, NS) were the others.
With the win, the REDS remain grab a share of first place in the AUS standings with a 19-5-1-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record, while SMU remains seventh at 10-10-4-2.
The game was the final regular season home game for the REDS who will face STFX in Antigonish at 7:00pm Friday. The Huskies will host Mount Allison, at 3:00pm next Saturday.
