REDS stop third-quarter rally by Axemen to grab win

WOLFVILLE, NS – Unable to make gains on a 46-31 UNB lead at the half, the Acadia Axemen fell to the UNB REDS 88–69.

Norm Burry (Grafton, N.B.) was named the Subway Player of the Game. Burry led the REDS in scoring with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Miguel Perez Boskovic (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, ESP) shone off the bench for Acadia with a game-high 20 points, shooting 73% from the field and 100% from three.

Despite a third-quarter rally from the Axemen, the REDS maintained their lead from the first quarter onward. UNB's largest lead came midway through the second quarter when they went up 21 points.

Acadia fought back in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to as few as seven points. The Axemen charge was led by Ryan Munro (Timberlea, N.S.) who scored 7 of the team's 18 third-quarter points and shot perfectly from the floor.

The REDS showed off their depth, with five players reaching double figures in scoring. Among them was Malik Grant (Brampton, Ont.) who scored 14 points as well as dishing out four assists and tallying three steals.

UNB also proved to be the more physical team as they outscored Acadia 48–32 on points in the paint. Their physicality also got the REDS to the line more frequently, where they were able to cash in at a 94% clip and outscore the Axemen, 16–7 from the line.

The Axemen fall to 2–13 on the season while the REDS rise to 6–10. The win gives UNB control of the fourth spot in the AUS standings with two teams just 4 points behind.

Acadia will play at home against the Memorial Sea-Hawks next Saturday at 8:00 p.m. The next game for UNB will take place next Sunday at 4:00 PM at home against the STFX X-Men
