ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY SPORT ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Week ending Feb. 25

 

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Name: Alaina McMillan
University: Saint Mary’s Sport: Women’s Basketball
Position: Guard
Hometown: Brantford, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: Arts

 

Alaina McMillan of the Saint Mary’s Huskies women’s basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25, 2024.

McMillan led the Huskies to their second straight AUS championship, and was named Most Valuable Player of the championship tournament for the second straight season. In a pair of games, McMillan averaged 15.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

In Saturday's 71-61 semifinal win over STFX, McMillan scored nine points, adding four assists, three rebounds and a steal.

It was in Sunday's 64-49 final victory over UNB where McMillan really shined. She poured in 22 points - including 15 in the second half - adding six assists, three rebounds, three blocks and two steals..

McMillan, who was named an AUS First Team All-Star for the third consecutive year earlier in the week, was also named a Tournament All-Star for the second straight year.

McMillan and the Huskies become the first team to repeat as AUS Champions since the Acadia Axewomen in 2018-19 and 2017-18.

 

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Name: Reagan Crowell
University: Dalhousie
Sport: Women’s Swimming
Hometown: Lakeville, N.B.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: Psychology

 

Reagan Crowell of the Dalhousie Tigers women’s swimming team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25, 2024.

Crowell, a fifth-year Psychology student, led the Tigers women’s swimming team to their 22nd straight AUS title this weekend.

She won four individual gold medals – 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle - and along with her Tigers teammates, won two relay gold medals (4x200m freestyle, 4x400m freestyle relay) and a silver medal (400m medley).

During the meet she was named the AUS Swimmer of the Year and the AUS Swimmer of the Meet.

 

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Name: Abbi Gaudry
University: Dalhousie
Sport: Women’s Track and Field
Hometown: Windsor Junction, N.S.
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: Kinesiology

 

Abbi Gaudry of the Dalhousie Tigers women’s track and field team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending, Feb. 25, 2024.

The third-year Kinesiology student from Windsor Junction, N.S. was integral as the Tigers captured their 34th AUS title this past weekend in Moncton, N.B.

On Friday, Gaudry placed first in both the heptathlon and 60m hurdles (setting a new record in the hurdles). One day later, she captured gold again, this time in the women’s long jump.

Gaudry went on to be named the MVP of the Meet.

Malcolm Christie of the Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Male Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25, 2024.

Christie, a third-year Commerce student from Fredericton, N.B., led his Tigers to the AUS title this past weekend, earning tournament MVP and all-star honours for his work.

After receiving a bye to the semifinals based on their second place finish during the regular season, Christie scored 27 points and added four rebounds in their 90-75 win over Saint Mary’s University on Saturday night.

In the championship final, Christie netted 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds as his Tigers defeated the STFX X-Men 77-67 in overtime to capture the AUS title.

Earlier in the week, Christie was also named an AUS First Team All-Star and the league MVP.

Chris Weeks of the Memorial University men’s swimming team is the Atlantic University Sport Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25, 2024.

Weeks, a first-year swimming from Mount Pearl, NL, shined in his first AUS Swimming Championships, capturing the gold medal in the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Because of his showing, Weeks was named AUS Male Swimmer of the Year, AUS Male Rookie of the Year, AUS Male Swimmer of the Meet and AUS Male Rookie of the Meet.

 

MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Name: Dan Lord
University: Dalhousie
Sport: Men’s Track and Field
Hometown: 
Windsor, N.S.
Year of eligibility: 
Fourth
Academic program: Nursing

 

Dan Lord of the Dalhousie Tigers men’s track and field team is the Atlantic University Sport Male Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25, 2024.

At the AUS Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Moncton, N.B., the fourth-year runner helped the Tigers win their ninth-straight conference title, earning Meet MVP honours.

He captured gold in the men’s 600m race, setting a new AUS standard while doing so, and took silver in the men’s 300m event.

He also ran anchor on Dal’s 4x400m gold medal winning team, and 4x200m silver medal winning team.
