STFX's Amanda Smith and Cape Breton's Owen Sheppard named AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Amanda Smith from the STFX X-Women's soccer team and Owen Sheppard from the Cape Breton Capers men's soccer team have been named the AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: BEd

Amanda Smith of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women soccer team is the Atlantic University Sport women’s athlete of the week for the week ending Oct. 1, 2023.

A second-year BEd student in her fifth year of eligibility from Ottawa, Ont., Smith scored five goals in two shutout wins at home for the 9-0 X-Women this past weekend.

In Friday’s 5-0 win over Mount Allison, she was named player of the game after an impressive four-goal performance.

She followed up with another goal in STFX’s 4-0 win over UPEI on Saturday.

Smith is currently tied for top spot in the country in goals scored with 13 this season.

University: Cape Breton University
Sport: Men’s Soccer
Position: Forward
Hometown: St. John’s, N.L.
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: BBA

Owen Sheppard of the Cape Breton Capers men’s soccer team is the Atlantic University Sport men’s athlete of the week for the week ending Oct. 1, 2023.

A third-year forward from St. John’s, N.L., Sheppard was named player of the game in two weekend wins at home for the Capers this past weekend.

He scored an impressive three goals in Cape Breton’s 5-1 win over UPEI on Friday. He then went on to be named player of the game with five shots in the Capers’ 2-1 win over Mount Allison Saturday.

Sheppard currently leads the conference with seven goals so far this season.
