UNB's Oitomen, Acadia's Lake and Memorial's Weeks named AUS Athletes of the Week

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Name: Sydney Oitomen
University: UNB
Sport: Women’s Hockey
Position: Forward
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: Kinesiology

Sydney Oitomen of the UNB Reds women’s hockey team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2024.

The Mississauga, Ont., product played a key role in helping her Reds capture their third consecutive AUS women’s hockey title early last week. In Tuesday’s series-clinching win over the STFX X-Women, Oitomen assisted on the game-tying marker midway through the third period and then scored the winning goal in double overtime.

Oitomen, a Kinesiology student, was named the AUS women’s hockey playoff MVP.

The Reds now head to Saskatoon to compete in the U SPORTS Championship from March 13-17.

Name: Jenna Lake
University: Acadia
Sport: Women’s Volleyball
Position: Outside
Hometown: Conception Bay South, NL
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: Psychology

Jenna Lake of the Acadia Axewomen volleyball team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2024.

The product of Conception Bay South, NL, made history with her Axewomen last week as they captured the program’s first AUS volleyball title, beating the Saint Mary’s Huskies 2-1 in their best-of-three championship final series early last week.

Lake, a Psychology student, put in a dominant performance in the title-clinching game, recording 17 kills and 10 digs in her team’s three-set victory. She was also named the AUS women’s volleyball playoff MVP.

The Axewomen will now look to the U SPORTS women’s volleyball championship, set to be played March 15-17 at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

Academic program: General Studies

Chris Weeks of the Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s swimming team is the Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2024.

The first-year swimmer from Mount Pearl, NL, capped off his season with a spectacular performance at the U SPORTS national championships, hosted by McGill University in Montreal.

On Friday, Weeks set a new U SPORTS record in the 50-metre butterfly, finishing the race in a time of 23.90 seconds, winning gold and beating the previous record of 24.04 set back in 2015. The win also secured a First Team All-Canadian selection for Weeks.

A day later, the General Studies student earned a silver medal in the 100m freestyle event.

Because of his performance during the meet, Weeks was named the U SPORTS Male Rookie of the Year.
