UPEI's Reese Baxendale, Dalhousie's Courtney Baker and Alex Carson named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) UPEI's Reese Baxendale and Dalhousie's Courtney Baker (co-winners), along with Dalhousie's Alex Carson have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (CO-WINNERS)

Reese Baxendale of the UPEI Panthers women’s basketball team is the co-winner of the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week award for the week ending March 1, 2020.

A third-year guard from Sussex, N.B., Baxendale was named the AUS Championship MVP this past weekend as the UPEI Panthers captured their first conference title since 1997-98.

In Saturday’s 73-60 win over the UNB Reds, she scored 21 points and added a rebound, an assist and a steal.

Sunday, the Panthers topped the two-time defending champion Acadia Axewomen 78-59 to capture the championship banner. Baxendale led all scorers with 25 points, adding seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.

She was named Subway Player of the Game in the final and a tournament all-star for her efforts.

Courtney Baker of the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Dalhousie Tigers women’s volleyball team is the co-winner of the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week award for the week ending March 1, 2020.

A fifth-year setter from Bridgewater, N.S., Baker was named the AUS Championship MVP this week after the Tigers swept the Saint Mary’s Huskies in two games to capture their eighth consecutive conference title.

She had 34 assists in Thursday night’s 3-0 win in the first match of the best-of-three championship final series. She also had 13 digs and five service aces in the match.

In Friday night’s second and final match of the series, she recorded 24 assists, 11 digs and two kills in the Tigers’ 3-0 win.

Alex Carson of the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending March 1, 2020.

A fourth-year guard from Lower Sackville, N.S., Carson was named the AUS Championship MVP this past weekend as the Dalhousie Tigers won their fifth conference title in six years.

He scored 15 points in his 23 minutes on the court in Saturday’s 84-64 semifinal win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. He also had five rebounds and two blocks in the effort and was named the Subway Player of the Game.

In Sunday’s championship final, Carson scored a game-high 22 points in the Tigers’ 76-64 win over the StFX X-Men. He also added another five rebounds, four steals and a block to earn Subway Player of the Game honours for the second straight game.

He was also named to the tournament all-star team for his efforts.

Sarah Charnock of the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Acadia Axewomen soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 22, 2019.

A fifth-year keeper from Newmarket, Ont., Charnock backstopped the Axewomen to two weekend wins over the Dalhousie Tigers and the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Cape Breton Capers.

Acadia earned a 1-0 win over the Tigers Friday night in Wolfville, N.S. Charnock had two saves in the win.

She made another four saves Sunday as the Axewomen topped the two-time defending AUS champion Capers 2-1.  She was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts.

Tane Caubo of the StFX X-Men soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 22, 2019.

A fourth-year arts student from London, England, Caubo had eight points in two games this weekend for the X-Men.

In StFX’s 6-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Saturday in Sackville, N.B., he scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal. He was named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Sunday in Fredericton, N.B., the X-Men tied the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked UNB Reds 3-3. Caubo had two goals and an assist in the draw.
