Memorial's Nickerson and Acadia's Flodell named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Memorial Sea-Hawks women's basketball player Haille Nickerson and Acadia Axemen hockey player Logan Flodell have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

University: Memorial University

Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: Physical education

Haille Nickerson of the Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 5, 2020.

A fifth-year guard from Grimsby, Ont., Nickerson led the Sea-Hawks to two weekend wins at home over the Dalhousie Tigers to open second semester play.

Saturday, Memorial downed Dalhousie 78-45. Nickerson posted a game-high 34 points and six steals, along with five rebounds and two assists.

The Sea-Hawks completed the weekend sweep of the Tigers Sunday with a 79-66 win. Nickerson had a game-high 26 points, as well as four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

She currently leads the AUS in points per game, averaging 24.3. The Sea-Hawks sit in sole possession of first place in the conference standings with an 8-2 record.

Logan Flodell of the U SPORTS No. 6-ranked Acadia Axemen hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 5, 2020.

A second-year business student from Regina, Sask., Flodell helped lead the Axemen to two weekend wins to kick off second semester play and extend Acadia’s winning streak to six straight games.

Flodell was named Subway Player of the Game in both wins. He made 47 saves in Acadia’s 5-2 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies Friday night in Wolfville, N.S. He followed that up with a 38-save performance on Saturday night as the Axemen downed the UPEI Panthers 5-3 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Flodell now boasts a league-leading save percentage of .916. The Axemen retain sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 16-4 record.

University: Acadia University
Sport: Women’s Soccer
Position: Keeper
Hometown: Newmarket, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Fifth

Sarah Charnock of the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Acadia Axewomen soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 22, 2019.

A fifth-year keeper from Newmarket, Ont., Charnock backstopped the Axewomen to two weekend wins over the Dalhousie Tigers and the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Cape Breton Capers.

Acadia earned a 1-0 win over the Tigers Friday night in Wolfville, N.S. Charnock had two saves in the win.

She made another four saves Sunday as the Axewomen topped the two-time defending AUS champion Capers 2-1.  She was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts.

Tane Caubo of the StFX X-Men soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 22, 2019.

A fourth-year arts student from London, England, Caubo had eight points in two games this weekend for the X-Men.

In StFX’s 6-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Saturday in Sackville, N.B., he scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal. He was named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Sunday in Fredericton, N.B., the X-Men tied the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked UNB Reds 3-3. Caubo had two goals and an assist in the draw.
