Huskies defeat Axewomen in five sets, extend winning streak to three

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The defending AUS champion Saint Mary's Huskies won their third match in a row with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Acadia Axewomen in women's volleyball action Wednesday evening at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

The Huskies (3-6) fell behind 2-1 before rallying to win the final two sets. Game scores were 20-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16 and 15-7.

Ariel Smith (Yarmouth, N.S.) recorded a game-high 20 kills and 22.5 points, and added 18 digs and an ace in the win.

For the Huskies, Anastasia Callaghan (Truro, N.S.), the reigning AUS libero of the year and current leader in AUS digs (4.51 per game), had a game-high 23 digs.

Subway player of the game Nicole McCulloch (Shubenacadie, N.S.) added 11 kills and 4.5 total blocks.

Bri Rector (Milton, Ont.) led the Axewomen (2-7) with 15 kills and 13 digs, while Kristen Bolduc (Sudbury, Ont.) had 13 kills and 6.5 blocks in a losing effort.

Former AUS rookie of the year Meg Rector (Milton, Ont.) added 11 kills and seven digs for Acadia. Rector currently leads the conference in kills at 3.31 per game.

With the two points, the Huskies move into a third place tie in the AUS standings with the StFX X-Women with six points.

Acadia is now in a three-way tie for fifth place.

Saint Mary's and Acadia will face each other once more before the holiday break, on Tuesday, November 29th at War Memorial Gym in Wolfville, N.S.
