Dalhousie Tigers capture 32nd AUS women's track and field title

(MONCTON, N.B.)  The Dalhousie Tigers claimed both the men's and women's championship banners at the 2022 Subway AUS Track and Field Championships, presented by Bell Aliant, hosted by the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleu(e)s

The Tigers' women's team finished with 153 points to claim their 32nd consecutive championship banner. The UNB REDS followed in second with 76 points while the STFX X-Women finished third with 60 points. The host Moncton Aigles Bleues finished in fourth with 44 points.

The Dalhousie men earned 138.5 points and their 19th championship banner in 20 years. The UNB REDS men's team claimed second place with 95 points and the Moncton Aigles Bleues finished third with 68 points.

Dalhousie's Lorena Heubach was named the championship's Subway AUS Athlete of the Meet after capturing gold in the women’s long jump as well as the women’s pentathlon. 

Moncton’s Max Mazerolle was the championship's Subway AUS Athlete of the Meet on the men's side. He captured gold medals in the men's heptathlon as well as the men's 60m hurdles and pole vault.


AUS Women's Track and Field Major Award Winners

TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Siona Chisholm, STFX University

Siona Chisholm of the STFX X-Women is the AUS track athlete of the year for 2021-22. A first-year human kinetics student from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Chisholm won gold in both the 1500m and 3000m runs at the 2022 AUS championship.

This marks the fifth time a STFX athlete has won track athlete of the year, Chisholm follows Jane Hergett, who took home the honour in 2019-20.

FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Lexie Shannon, University of New Brunswick

Lexie Shannon from the UNB REDS is the AUS field athlete of the year. A third-year arts student from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Shannon captured gold in both the 60m dash and the triple jump, and finished third in the long jump.

This marks the fourth time a REDS athlete has won field athlete of the year and Shannon’s second consecutive win.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Siona Chisholm, STFX University

Siona Chisholm of the STFX X-Women is the 2021-22 AUS women’s track and field rookie of the year. Today he was also named the 2021-22 AUS track athlete of the year.

The first-year student from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Chisholm won gold in both the 1500m and 3000m runs. This is the fifth time an X-Women has been named rookie of the year. The last STFX winner was Hayley Wilson in 2014-15.

STUDENT-ATHLETE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD: Abbey MacLellan, Dalhousie University

Abbey MacLellan from the Dalhousie Tigers women’s track and field team has been named the 2021-22 student-athlete community service award winner.

In her fourth year with the Tigers, Pownal, PEI’s MacLellan finished fourth in the 600m and was part of a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay today.

A second-year medical student, she currently studies neonatal heart physiology at the IWK, researching treatments used on premature babies to see which are the safest and most effective for managing congenital heart conditions. MacLellan is also doing gastroenterology research, exploring how parents make decisions for their child’s inflammatory bowel disease treatment.

MacLellan volunteers her time as an editor for the Dalhousie Medical Journal, a student-run peer-reviewed journal, where oversees the peer review process for submitted manuscripts and works with experts in the Dalhousie medical community to ensure manuscript quality before publication. She is also collaborating with Regional Residential Services Society to write an E-book for med students to build competence with patients with disabilities.

When she’s at home in PEI, MacLellan runs field hockey skills clinics for junior high, high school, and university level PEI field hockey players and their coaches.

This is the eighth time a Dalhousie women’s track and field athlete has won this award. The last Tiger to receive the honour was Morgan Hawkes in 2015-16.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Chris Belof, University of New Brunswick

In his fourth season with the REDS, head coach Chris Belof has been named the 2021-22 AUS women’s track and field coach of the year. Belof led the REDS to a second-place finish today, with 76 points. This is a program-first finish for the REDS.

This is Belof’s first coach of the year nod and the first time a UNB coach has won this award.

VOLUNTEER COACH OF THE YEAR: Andrew Conrad, Dalhousie University

The Dalhousie Tigers’ hurdles coach, Andrew Conrad, is the 2021-22 AUS women’s track and field volunteer coach of the year. Conrad helped to lead both the women’s and men’s Tigers teams to AUS banners today and is the first Dalhousie coach to with this award.
