X-Women win third straight

In the fifth week of the AUS women's hockey season, the StFX X-Women earned a weekend sweep to win their third straight game.

The X-Women took home a hard-fought victory on Friday night, dropping the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies 2-0 in Antigonish. Joanna Martinsen recorded the first goal for StFX, earning player of the game honours, with Mackenzie Lothian adding a powerplay victory to secure the win. Amaya Giraudier made 19 saves for the X-Women, earning the shutout. 

Sunday afternoon, the U SPORTS No. 8 ranked X-Women dropped the UPEI Panthers 3-1 in Antigonish. Kamdyn Switzer, Ireland McCloskey and Tea Pearce all found the back of the net for StFX in the win, while UPEI's lone goal came from Kierra St. Peter. Amaya Giraudier made 16 saves in the win, while Erin Cabaday stopped 35 in net for the Panthers. 

The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues played to a 3-1 over the UPEI Panthers Wednesday night. Amelie Vachon, Lianne Desforges and Erica Plourde all recorded tallies in the win, while UPEI's lone goal came from Chiara Esposito.  

They then earned their second win of the weekend as they blanked the league-leading UNB Reds 2-0 on Saturday night. The Aigles Bleues scored twice in the final minute to defeat the Reds, with Lianne Desforges scoring the game-winning goal, earning the Tim Hortons Player of the Game honours. Shani Rossignol also added an empty-net tally in the win, while Audrey Berthiaume made 24 saves for the shutout. 

The Reds split their weekend games as they scored even strength, short-handed, on the power-play and into an empty net in a 4-2 win over the St. Thomas Tommies on Wednesday night. Lauren Carter scored twice for UNB and was named the Player of the Game. Lillian George and Katelyn Scott also found the back of the net for UNB, while the Tommies goals came from Amy Dvernichuk and Natalie MacKay.

The Dalhousie Tigers outlasted the Mount Allison Mounties 4-3 on Friday night in Sackville. Olivia Eustace was awarded AUS Player of the Game honours with a two-goal performance, while teammates Emma Silvernagle and Brooklyn Paisley (PP) added tallies in the win. Dallis Mackenzie scored twice for the home team, with Hailey Simoneau adding a powerplay goal in the loss.  

The Tigers then visited their cross-town rival Saint Mary's Huskies Saturday night, where the Huskies doubled the Tigers 6-3 to earn the victory. Huskies forward Avery Cant was named Player of the Game, scoring a goal and an assist on the night. Aimee O'Neill (SH), Abigail Mackenzie, Charlotte Buffie, Maddy Corbett (PP) and Erin Denny also found the back of the net in the win, while Dalhousie goals came from Olivia Eustace (2) and Brooklyn Paisley. Maggie Baxter made 26 saves in net for the Tigers, while Ridleigh Hansen stopped 17 shots for the Huskies.

The Tommies edged the Mounties 4-3 in a shootout Saturday night. Goals in regulation came from St. Thomas' Amy Dvernichuk and Ekaterina Pelowich (2), while Reese Chuback (PP), Molle Grabe and Charlotte Swanton scored on the Mounties side. After the first three shooters for both teams could not capitalize, it was Claire Nimegeers who scored the winning goal for the Tommies. Hanna Pagdado was given AUS Player of the Game honours for her performance in goal for the Mounties.
