Mounties defeat Saint Mary’s 3-1

(SACKVILLE, N.B.) - The Mount Allison women's hockey Mounties won for the seventh time in their last eight starts on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the second-place Saint Mary's Huskies 3-1 at the Tantramar Memorial Civic Centre.

The win solidifies their fifth-place position in the league standings. They trail third the place St. Thomas Tommies and the fourth-place Moncton Aigles Bleues by three and one points respectively with games in hand.

With the win, the Mounties also clinched their fourth straight playoff berth, having reached the AUS Championship game in 2012.

On Sunday afternoon, for the second consecutive game, the Mounties' Samantha Bujold opened the scoring at 1:59 of the first period with an unassisted goal. This was the only goal of the period in which the Mounties out-shot the Huskies 9-4.

Team captain Kristen Cooze extended the lead to 2-0 at 3:30 of the second period with a goal assisted by Hailey Munroe. The Huskies scored 15 seconds later on a marker by Nicole Blanche to make it 2-1 after forty minutes. Shots on goal were 9-7 in favour of the Huskies in the second period.

The Mounties came out flying in the third period and were rewarded with an unassisted goal by Amanda Volcko just 22 seconds into the period.

The Mounties controlled the rest of the period out-shooting Saint Mary's 12-5 and 28-18 over the sixty minutes.

Rookie Keri Martin recorded her second consecutive win over the Huskies in goal for the Mounties.

Mount Allison will have a brief time to rest before they host the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues this Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7:15 p.m. at the Tantramar Civic Centre. This will be the first of two consecutive games against Moncton as the two teams will meet again on Saturday evening in Moncton.

The Huskies next take to the ice Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m. when they visit the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown.
