Axemen and Tigers move atop standings with weekend sweeps

In Week 3 of AUS men's basketball action, the Acadia Axemen and Dalhousie Tigers swept their weekend games to pick up four points apiece and move to the top of the standings.

The Acadia Axemen led from start to finish as they topped the Cape Breton Capers 106-102 on Friday night in Wolfville. Glen Cox led all scorers with a 30-point night. Cape Breton's Shak Pryce wasn't far off, ending the night with a team-high 28 points for the Capers. For Acadia, Thomas MacDonald had the team's only double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. He also finished the night with four blocks. Rounding out the double-digit scoring for the Axemen were Samou Brayan Kone with 10 points, player of the game Demeric Mercer with 23 and Gabe Davignon with 12. The Capers double-double came from Shaquai Manswell's 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Mitchell Mersereau, Justus Peuser and Tyson Cato had double-digit scoring outputs.

The Axemen led from the get-go Saturday night as they defeated the Capers 98-74. Glen Cox led all scorers with 36 points, shooting 14-for-27 from the field, 3-for-7 from three and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. On both sides of the ball, Thomas MacDonald had the best night across both teams as he finished with the only double-double, scoring 10 points with 16 boards. Shakael Pryce and Stefan Anisko each scored 20 points to lead Cape Breton's offence in the loss.

The Dalhousie Tigers started their week with a 76-65 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies Wednesday night. Malcolm Christie led the Tigers in the win, finishing with a game-high 30 points, adding five rebounds and block for the home team. For the Huskies, Jayrell Diggs finished with a team-high 17 points, while Marc-Denault Gabriel finished with a double-double, recording 13 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four assists, one steal and one block.  

The Tigers then walked away victorious from the Homburg Centre Friday night, defeating the Huskies 84-73. Player of the Game Nginyu Ngala led the Tigers with 25 points on 8-14 from the field and 6-6 from the free-throw line. Malcolm Christie added 21 points and three assists, while Samuel Maillet stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals. The Huskies were led by Shae Linton-Brown who scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and Jonas Maerz who chipped in 15 points on 5-10 from three-point range.

The Memorial Sea-Hawks were also able to pick up four points this weekend, sweeping the StFX X-Men in back-to-back games in St. John's this weekend. The Sea-Hawks defeated the X-Men by a score of 92-78 in their first of two games Friday night. Flynn Boardman-Raffet dominated the court, leading the Sea-Hawks side with 25 points. Not far behind was Emmanuel Ring with 18 points. Leading for the X-Men side was Gatluak James with 25 points, while Antoine Vernon scored 19 in the loss.

The Sea-Hawks then defeated the X-Men 83-74 Saturday night after an intense game. Flynn Boardman-Raffet was the leading scorer of the night, scoring 21 points for Sea-Hawks, while Emmanuel Ring was able to tally 20 points and Nick Tuff left with 16. Leading the way for the X-Men was Dondre Reddick, finishing with 20 points.

The UNB Reds beat the UPEI Panthers 83-69 Friday night, Javordo Mitchell led the Reds with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game. UPEI's Jace Colley led all scorers with 20 points while Kamari Scott dropped 12 in the loss.

The Panthers bounced back, scoring 31 points in the first quarter en route to an 87-73 win over the Reds, Saturday night at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center. UPEI's Kamari Scott led all scorers with 31 points on 12-for-21 shooting from the field. He was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game. Javordo Mitchell registered a double-double in leading the REDS. He scored 16 points and pulled down a dozen rebounds.
