Huskies drop home opener 41-14 to visiting Axemen
(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The Acadia Axewomen defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 41-14 on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic University Sport women's rugby action from Huskies Stadium.
The win was Acadia's third in a row to start the first month of the season and have the Axewomen ranked no. 5 by U SPORTS.
Seven different Axewomen scored tires on the afternoon but only converted kicks on three of them, with Claire Fioretti (Calgary, AB) having two.
Acadia scored three tries in the first half compared to one for SMU and the Axewomen led 19-7 at half.
The second half saw Acadia with four tries versus one for SMU as the Axewomen won 41-14.
Sarah Palfy opened the scoring for Acadia and an Axewomen turnover on a SMU kick led to SMU's Elish Redshaw (Point Edward, NS) finding the ball in her hands off the bounce and scored the try for a 7-7 score early in the first half.
Katya Dondi (Caledon, ON) and Monique Coffey (Dauphin, MB) added tries in the first half for Acadia.
Bailey Dembicki (Lloydminster, SK) capitalized on a quick play from Acadia and opened the second half with a try for a 24-7 Axewomen lead.
Also adding tries for Acadia were Annie Kennedy (Kingston, ON), Tori Hogan (Tignish, PE) and Kathleen Curran (Guelph, ON).
Emma Baines (Halifax, NS) had the lone try for SMU in the second half and Acadia took the win 41-14.
Redshaw converted both her tries for Saint Mary's. Natasha Wotton (Wilmot, NS) added a convert kick for Acadia.
SMU drops to 0-3 while Acadia sits at 3-0 in AUS conference play. Palfy was named SUBWAY Player of the Game.
Both teams return to action next week when U SPORTS no. 3 ranked STFX visits Acadia September 27th at 7 p.m. in Wolfville while SMU travels to UPEI September 28th at 2 p.m.
