The atmosphere was on of celebration for the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (1-2-0) at the J.-Louis-Lévesque arena on Wednesday evening following their first win of the season.
It was Cassandra Call's goal in the shootout, the second for her team, and a key save by goalkeeper Aubrey Berthiaume that sank the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (1-0-2) by a 2-1 score to the delight of the 150 spectators present at the game.
Jolena Gillard, on the power play had given a 1-0 lead to the visitors. Clémence Dumesnil (Isadora Quirion, Shani Rossignol) in the 15th minute of the second period, levelled the odds. The teams missed great scoring chances in the third and overtime, as both goaltenders stood tall. Audrey Berthiaume faced 25 shots for the win against 34 for Shaylin McFarlane. Katelynn Nice opened the scoring in the shootout for the Panthers, but goals by Erica Plourde and Call sealed the win for Moncton.
The Panthers travel to Antigonish next for a Friday night matchup against the tough St. FX X-Women.
