Sea-Hawks Spoil REDS Home Opener
(FREDERICTON, NB) The Memorial Sea-Hawks played spoiler Friday evening in the UNB REDS 2023 Atlantic University Sport home opener.
The Sea-Hawks scored early in the first half and early in the second half in a 2-1 win over the REDS.
In the 13th minute, Kate Hickey (Outer Cove, NL) took advantage of a REDS' defensive miscue and then fired a low shot past UNB keeper Lauren Kelly (Fredericton, NB) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
"I had it and just dribbled into the box, and I just tried to tuck it far corner," said Hickey, named Tim Horton's Player of the Game. "We're always neck and neck with this team. We didn't expect them to roll over and they didn't. It was a really good game by both teams."
The REDS drew even in the 36th minute when Heidi Lauwerijssen (Kensington, PE) hit on a long chip shot over Sea-Hawks keeper Shannon Galway (St. John's, NL).
The teams were tied 1-1 at the half-time break.
In the 54th minute, the REDS came close to taking a lead when Lauwerijssen fed a lead pass to Aurora Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Heights, BC) who got a shot off, but it was turned away by a diving Galway.
About six minutes later, second half substitution Kendra Schram (Brandon, MB) restored Memorial's lead with her first goal of the season.
The Sea-Hawks carried their 2-1 lead the rest of the way.
"The loss is tough. I don't think we're very happy with our performance," said REDS' striker Mackenize Walsh (Middle Sackville, NS). "We had it. That was our game and we let it slip through our fingers. That one is on us."
With the win, the Sea-Hawks improve to 2-and-1. They'll visit Moncton on Sunday for a 12:00pm start.
The REDS remain winless through three starts and prepare to host Acadia, next Saturday (Sept. 16th). That game is scheduled for a 1:00pm kick-off.
