CAPERS drop Saturday Night Game in St.John's

St. John's, NL - The Memorial sea-Hawks were able to defeat the Cape Brenton Capers 67-62 in their first meeting of the weekend.
The Capers were able to get the first points of the game, but two back-to-back layups by Memorial's Alannah Short helped the Sea-Hawks go on a 6-0 run to make the score 6-2. Throughout most of the quarter, the teams exchanged baskets, and a 3-point by Rebecca Ekstrom tied the score at 16 to end the first.
The Capers' Chermensa Van had a layup to start the second quarter, but the Sea-Hawks responded straight away with a 3-pointer by Alyssa Jenkins. A three-point shot by Mackenzie Ryan put the Capers ahead, and they were able to keep the lead until the last minute of the first half when 3 unanswered layups by Memorial's Alannah Short put the Seahawks up by 1 point to end the half 38-37.
The Capers were led in the first half by Chermensa Van la par with 13 points and Mackenzee Ryan with 10, while Memorial's Alannah Short led all scorers with 15 points.
Kiyara Letlow dominated the court for the Capers at the beginning of the third quarter, scoring 2 layups and 2 free throws to put the Capers up by 5 and give them a 6-0 run. However, the Sea-Hakws were able to counter, and with a 3-pointer for Hannah Green, 8 points by Alannah Short and some strong defense, they were able to pull ahead 52-45 to end the quarter.
The fourth quarter opened with an exchange of baskets on both sides. Hailey Macleod, Kiara Letlow and Chermensa Van la par all put up some points for the Capers, while the Sea-Hawks were led by Alannah Short, Ines Salat-Margarit and Alyssa Jenkins. With 2 minutes remaining in the quarter, a layup by Hailey Macleod tied the score at 62 for the Capers, but a deep three by Rebecca Ekstrom put the Sea-Hawks back ahead. A block by Ines Salat Margarit and 2 good free throws allowed the Sea-Hawks to keep the lead and win the game 67-62.
Ines Salat-Margarit was the Subway Player of the game for the Sea-Hawks, with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Alannah Short had a game-high 26 points as well as 10 rebounds, while Rebecca Ektrom chipped in 12 points.
For the Capers, Kiara Letlow led the team with 21 points and had an impressive 22 rebounds. Chermensa Van la par finished the game with 16 points for the team and Mackenzee Ryan got 10.
The two teams will play each other again tomorrow at 12:00pm NST. The game will be live-streamed and can be viewed on AUS TV.
