Dalhousie men and women top AUS Curling Championship round robin

Montague, PEI — Day 3 of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Curling Championships saw the playoff matchups set. On the men’s side, Dalhousie finished the round robin with a 3-1 record to come out with the No. 1 seed. Following them is the Saint Mary’s Huskies (3-1), then UNB (2-2) and STFX (1-3). 

 

On the women’s side, Dalhousie earned top spot in the round robin with a 6-0. Mount Allison (4-2) and UNB (4-2) finished second and third, respectively. Saint Mary’s (3-3) will round out the playoff contenders. 

 

Sunday’s semifinals will go at 9 a.m. with the gold and bronze medal games set for 1 p.m. 

 

DRAW 7 
Women’s  

STFX vs UNB 
Final Score: 8-2 Reds (7 Ends) 

This game was evenly matched for five ends before the Reds took control. Up 3-2 going into the sixth end, UNB stole three to extend their lead to 6-2. In the very next end, the Reds stole two more which led to an early shake of hands after seven ends. 

 

Men’s 
Dal vs SMU
Final Score: 9-2 Tigers (6 Ends) 

The Saint Mary’s Huskies men’s team dropped their first game of the Championships, as the defending champion Tigers dominated this Saturday morning matchup. Tied 2-2 after three ends, Dal scored two in the fourth, stole three in the fifth and stole another two in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead before SMU conceded. 

 

UNB vs UPEI 
Final Score: 8-2 Panthers (7 Ends)
The host Panthers got back on track Saturday morning, beating UNB in seven ends. UPEI led 4-0 after three ends and put things away with two in the sixth and two more in the seventh. UNB scored a single in the fourth and stole one in the sixth, but that is as close as they would get.

Women’s 
 

Dal vs Mount Allison 
Score: 7-6 Tigers
The defending champs from Dalhousie were pushed in this Saturday afternoon contest, as the Mounties led 5-2 after four ends of play. Dalhousie chipped away at the lead, getting two back in the fifth and stealing one in the sixth to tie things up. After keeping Mount Allison to just one in the seventh, the Tigers utilized the hammer in the final end to score two and take the win. 

 

UPEI vs MUN
Score: 5-4 Panthers
This game saw four lead changes occur with UPEI emerging as the last team standing. Memorial started the game with a single in the first before stealing one in the second. UPEI replied with two of their own in the third to tie it, and then stole one in the fourth to take their first lead of the game. The Sea-Hawks regained their lead when they scored one in the fifth and stole another point in the sixth to go up 4-3. The Panthers did the exact same in the seventh and eighth ends to earn the win. 

 

SMU vs STFX 
Score: 7-5 Huskies
SMU came out on top in this high-scoring affair, putting four points on the board in the final three ends. The game started well for the Huskies, as they stole a pair in the first end of play. From there, STFX scored one in the second and stole a deuce in the third. SMU replied with one in the fourth before the X-Women put another two points on the board to take a 5-3 lead. From then on, it was all Huskies as they one in the sixth, stole two in the seventh and stole one more in the final end to ice the win. 

 

Men’s
Dal vs UPEI
Final Score: 8-3 Tigers
The Tigers (3-1) were in control of this match from the get go, getting out to a 4-0 lead after the first two ends, and then 7-1 after four ends. UPEI scored two in the fifth to cut the lead to four, but the Tigers scored a single in the ensuing end that caused the Panthers to concede.

Women’s  
 

MUN vs SMU 
Final Score: 5-3 Huskies 
In a close game Saturday night, Memorial started off well, scoring one in the first and then stealing one in the second to go up 2-0. SMU replied with singles in the fourth and fifth ends to tie the game. The teams then traded singles in the sixth and seventh ends, sending the game to the final end with Memorial having the hammer. They could not capitalize, allowing the Huskies to steal two and the match. 

 

Mount Allison vs UNB
Final Score: 9-3 Mounties (6 Ends)
What started out as close game quickly turned into a one-sided contest. After leading 3-2 after four ends of play, the Mounties scored six in the fifth end to take a commanding lead. While UNB got one back in the sixth, it wasn’t enough as the teams shook hands. 

 

Dal vs UPEI 
Final Score: 5-4 Tigers (EE) 
This one went the distance and then some, as UPEI was fighting to make it into the playoffs. The teams traded singles in each of the first four ends to sit tied at 2-2 before the Tigers changed things up by scoring a pair in the fifth. UPEI scored one to cut the lead to 4-3 and then stole one in the eighth to tie the game. In the final end, Dal was able to use the hammer to score one and finish the round robin a perfect 6-0. UPEI will miss the playoffs at 3-3.
