Tigers, Huskies still perfect at AUS Curling Championships

Dal women, SMU men still atop the table at AUC Curling Championships

Montague, PEI — Day 2 saw the Dalhousie Tiger women’s team earn a pair of wins to stay atop the standings, while on the men’s side, Saint Mary’s continues to hold down the top spot. 

 

DRAW 3 
Women’s  

Mount Allison vs STFX 
Final Score: 7-1 Mount Allison (6 Ends) 
The first game of Day 2 saw the Mount Allison Mounties women’s team earn a decisive 7-1 victory in which the teams shook hands after six ends. After blanking the first end, the X-Women gave up a steal of two in the second to the Mounties (2-1). STFX (0-3) cut the lead in half with a single in the third before conceding a single in the fourth and a pair of steals for two in both the fifth and sixth ends that ended the match 

 

UPEI vs SMU 
Final Score: 6-5 SMU (7 Ends) 
After going 2-0 on Day 1, things started off well for hosts in their third game of the AUS Curling Championships. The Panthers (2-1) scored two in the first and stole one in the third to get out to a 3-0 lead early. However, the Huskies (1-2) fought back with two of their own in third end followed by a steal of one in the fourth, another steal of one in the fifth and then a steal of two in the sixth end. UPEI would get two back in the seventh end before conceding the match. 

 

DAL vs MUN 
Final Score: 7-6 Tigers (EE) 
The defending champs from Dalhousie were pushed to start Day 2 but kept their unbeaten record alive after narrowly defeating Memorial University 7-6. Momentum shifted a few times during the match with Dal scoring two and then stealing one in the third and fourth ends to take a 4-1 lead. Memorial (1-2) clawed back with a deuce in the fifth end followed up with a steal of two in the sixth to take 5-4 lead after six ends. The Tigers regained their lead with two in the seventh before giving up one in the eighth to send the game to an extra end. In the final end, Dalhousie (3-0) had the hammer and took advantage, scoring one to secure the win. 

 

Men’s  

STFX vs UPEI 
Final Score: 8-3 X-Men (7 Ends) 
In their first game of the championships, the host UPEI men’s team were handed a tough 8-3 loss at the hands of the STFX X-Men (1-2). The X-Men stole two in the second before allowing a pair to the Panthers in the second end. STFX regained their two-point lead with a deuce in the third before stealing one in the fourth and fifth ends. UPEI added a single in the sixth but that’s as close as they would get as the X-Men cemented the win with a pair in the seventh.

Women’s  

DAL vs STFX 
Final Score: 8-2 Tigers (7 Ends)
The Dalhousie Tigers showed patience in this matchup, as the teams struggled to put points on the board for the first half of this game. After Dalhousie started with a single, STFX (0-4) blanked the second end, but was forced to take just one in the third. They made amends by stealing a single in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers (4-0) tied the game in the fifth end, and then blew things up from there, stealing two in the sixth and then four more in the seventh to keep their record perfect. 

 

Mount Allison vs MUN 
Final Score: 6-5 Mounties (EE) 
Mount Allison continued their fine play this weekend with a close win over Memorial Friday afternoon. The teams traded singles all the way up until the seventh end when Memorial (1-3) finally put a crooked number on the board – scoring two in the seventh end. Mount Allison responded with two of their own in the eighth to tie the match and send it to an extra end. In the final end, Mount Allison (3-1) stole one to earn the victory. 

 

SMU vs UNB 
Final Score: 5-3 Reds 
UNB’s women’s team moved to 2-1 for the event after a 5-3 win over SMU in a game that saw them get out to a 3-0 lead after four ends. SMU (1-3) responded with one of their own in the fifth end and then two in the seventh, but that was it for the Huskies. UNB added an insurance marker in the eighth end to finish the scoring. 

 

DRAW 6 
Women’s   

UNB vs UPEI 
Final Score: 5-4 Reds 
The UNB Reds and host UPEI Panthers put on the best game of Draw 6, as the teams went back and forth all game long. UNB was held to just one in the first end before giving it right back in the second. UNB picked up another single in the fourth end after blanking the third. The hosts stormed right back with a pair in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The teams traded singles in the sixth and seventh ends, forcing UNB to score one to send the game to an extra end or two to win it. The Reds did the latter and earned the 5-4 victory to move to 3-1 for the weekend. UPEI falls to 2-2. 

 

Men’s  

SMU vs UPEI 
Final Score: 7-1 Huskies (6 Ends) 
The undefeated Huskies took it to the hosts Friday night, beating them 7-1 to move to a perfect 3-0 for the weekend. After scoring one in the first, SMU (3-0) stole two in the third. After UPEI (0-2) got on the board with a single in the fourth, the Huskies blanked the fifth end before exploding for four in the sixth to force an early handshake. 

 

STFX vs UNB 
Final Score: 7-1 Reds (7 Ends) 
UNB opened the contest by blanking the first end. The decision paid off, as they scored four in the second to take a commanding lead over STFX. Following a scoreless third and fourth end, the Reds (2-1) stole a single in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0. The X-Men (0-4) got one back in the sixth before allowing two in the seventh and conceding the game.
