Kardas shines as CAPERS defeat York 1-0 in national quarterfinal

(QUEBEC CITY, QC) A Paige Allaby goal in the 60th minute and Haley Kardas' prowess in front of nets led the Cape Breton Capers to a 1-0 victory over the York Lions on Thursday afternoon in the third quarterfinal match at the 2022 U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship presented by Groupe Océan, at the TELUS-Université Laval Stadium in Quebec City.

U SPORTS Rookie All-Star Team member Grace Hannaford set the play leading to the game's only goal. Her pass on the wing enabled Paige Allaby to set free from the defender covering her and take a shot in the upper right corner to surprise Lions' keeper Patricia Vrysellas.

The Lions did everything looking for the equalizer, but Kardas stood up against a series of dangerous shots to keep her team ahead. She was particularly spectacular on Jotam Chuhan on an 83rd-minute penalty diving to her right to stop the ball.

With the win, the fourth-seeded Capers move to the semis on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET against the winner of the last quarterfinal opposing the UBC Thunderbirds to the Laval Rouge et Or. The York Lions will play the losers of that UBC-Laval match in the consolation semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
