Tigers extend win-streak to five in women's soccer action

The Dalhousie Tigers earned back-to-back victories in Week 6 of AUS women's soccer action to extend their winning streak, while the Cape Breton Capers hold on at the top of the standings with their third straight win.

The Tigers opened the weekend with a 1-0 victory over cross-town rivals, the Saint Mary's Huskies. Dalhousie grabbed an early lead in the 12th minute when striker Jordan Mansfield jumped on fellow striker, Chloe Richardson's rebound. The Tigers were able to maintain their lead with strategic defensive passing, helped in no small part by second-year midfielder Megan Chiasson. Chiasson was named the Subway Player of the game for her efforts. Emily Toth made five saves in net for Dalhousie for the shutout.

Dalhousie then blanked the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 5-0 Sunday afternoon in Moncton. Chiasson found the back of the net twice in the win, with Olivia Jack, Taylor Heard and Paris Axam also recording tallies for the visitors. Tigers goaltender Annabel Graveley made three saves for the shutout.

The U SPORTS No. 10 ranked Cape Breton Capers earned a 2-1 victory over the No. 8 ranked StFX X-Women Friday night in Homecoming action at STFX Stadium. Grace Hannaford scored the game-winning goal in extra time to seal the win as the first-place Capers improve to 7-1-0 on the season. Goals in regulation came from Cape Breton's Alliyah Rowe and StFX's Brynn Jurus, while Subway Player of the Game honours went to Capers midfielder Senate Letsie for her strong game play.

The Capers then travelled to Charlottetown to take on the UPEI Panthers Sunday afternoon, where they doubled the home team 4-2. Rowe recorded two goals for Cape Breton, while Letsie and Ally Wilton also found the back of the net in the win. UPEI's goals in the loss came from Sarah Eden and Heather Williams.

The Acadia Axewomen have climbed two spots into third in the standings as they recorded two shutout victories in Week 6. Two goals by midfielder Madyson Harris helped the Axewomen pick up a 3-0 win over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties Friday night. Grace Longley added the third tally for Acadia in the win, while Milena Ramirez earned the shutout in net. 

The Axewomen then soared to a 5-0 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax Sunday afternoon. Longley found the back of the net twice, with teammates Mya Harnish, Abigail Aucoin and Rosie Nichols adding tallies in the win. Ramirez made an impressive eight saves to earn her second shutout of the weekend for Acadia.

The UNB Reds hosted the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Fredericton Saturday afternoon where the teams both picked up a point, playing to a draw. The Sea-Hawks had the upper-hand with a 2-1 lead heading into the final minutes of play when an own goal by the Sea-Hawks off a free kick from Carolina Grzesniak in the 85th minute completed a second-half comeback for the Reds for a final score of 2-2. Grzesniak was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts. Zoe Rowe and Alyssa Jenkins found the back of the net for Memorial in the draw.

The Sea-Hawks then visited the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville Sunday afternoon, where the Mounties picked up their first victory of the season, edging the visitors 2-0. Taryn Greco and Isabelle Hebert-Senecal found the back of the net in the victory, while Sophie Austin made four saves in net for the shutout.
