Tommies Blank REDS to Even AUS Semifinal Series
Jordan Chaulk’s second-period goal stands up as St. Thomas edges UNB 1-0, knotting best-of-five at 1-1
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) The UNB REDS dropped a 1-0 decision to the St. Thomas Tommies in game two of their best-of-five Atlantic University Sport women's hockey semi-final, Thursday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
That series is now tied at a game apiece.
After Wednesday's 1-0 UNB win in game one, the close nature of the series carried over.
The teams played through a scoreless first period that saw UNB outshoot the Tommies 14-7.
Nearing the mid-way point of the second, the Tommies took advantage of a neutral zone turnover by the REDS.
Alexie Palchinski fed a pass to Jordan Chaulk, who back-handed the puck past REDS' goalie Cassie McCallum to put the visitors up 1-0.
While both teams had powerplay opportunities in the third period, neither team could find another goal and the Tommies evened the series.
McCallum made 15 saves on 16 shots and Tommies' goalie Katie Sweeney, named AUS MVP earlier on Thursday, stopped 31 in her shut-out. She was named the Boston Pizza Player of the Game.
The series now shifts to the Tommies' home rink, Fredericton's Grant-Harvey Centre.
Game three is scheduled for Sunday night at 7:00pm with the fourth game of the series on Monday, also at 7:00pm.
