Atlantic University Sport statement regarding cancellation of U SPORTS hockey and volleyball championships

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Atlantic University Sport supports the very difficult decision made by U SPORTS to cancel the national hockey and volleyball championships.

The health and wellness of our student-athletes, university sport fans, partners, administrators and other stakeholders is paramount in light of the uncertainty regarding COVID-19.

We thank the U SPORTS senior leadership and board, in conjunction with the national championship hosts for their pro-active approach to managing this significant public health issue.

AUS has been and will continue to be, through its Athlete Health, Wellness and Safety Committee (co-chaired by Dr. Sonja McVeigh and Dr. David Cudmore), in direct contact with the Chief Medical Officer of Nova Scotia to ensure that we are continuing to be on the front end of COVID-19 developments locally and regionally.

Lastly, our thoughts are with the student-athletes affected by these decisions. The path to a U SPORTS championship is not an easy one. We recognize the hard work and commitment shown throughout the season which afforded them the opportunity to compete on the national stage.

As leaders and role models on their respective campuses and in their communities, we know these student-athletes understand the rationale behind these decisions.
