Huskies pick up four-point win to lead standings

In Week 5 of AUS women's basketball action, the Saint Mary's Huskies earned their seventh win of the season, allowing them to pick up four points to lead the standings.

Wednesday night, Saint Mary's guards Sophia Widmeyer and Alaina McMillan combined for 47 points, helping power the Huskies to a 79-72 win over the U SPORTS #5 ranked Acadia Axewomen at the Homburg Centre in Halifax. Widmeyer was named Subway Player of the Game with a game-high 28 points, adding six rebounds, and a season-high seven steals. McMillan added 19 points, five assists and five rebounds in the win, while Clara Gascoigne scored a season-high 13 points, and added four rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks. The Axewomen were led by guard Haley McDonald, who scored 21 points and six assists, while teammate Sandy Saunders chipped in 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Friday, the Huskies nearly erased a 22-point third-quarter deficit but came up just short, as the UPEI Panthers held on for a 79-74 victory in Halifax. Panthers guard Lauren Rainford was named Subway Player of the Game with a game-high 25 points, and added a career-high 10 rebounds, along with five assists and three steals. Devon Lawlor added 16 points off the Panthers bench, Alicia Bowering added 12 and three steals, and Aiden Rainford posted an 11 point, 10 rebound double-double. The Huskies were led by Alaina McMillan who scored 16 points and added three steals. Sophia Widmeyer and Lucina Beaumont each scored 13, with Beaumont also leading the team with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

The Dalhousie Tigers and StFX X-Women both earned their first victories of the season, to record four points apiece. The Tigers hosted the UPEI Panthers Saturday, completing the comeback to earn a 61-57 win. Andrea Hebert led the Tigers with 12 points, adding four rebounds and an assist in the win, while Alicia Bowering led the Reds in the loss with 14 points, adding six rebounds. 

The X-Women's first win of the season came against the Tigers as they earned a 79-57 victory. StFX's Katie Upham almost had a triple-double to lead the way for the visitors. Upham finished with nine points, eight rebounds and 11 assists on the night. Mercy Olugu had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Tigers.

The Cape Breton Capers edged the UNB Reds 78-74 Friday evening with an outstanding effort from Capers forward Kiyara Letlow. Letlow, the Subway player of the game, finished with 40 points and 17 rebounds for the double-double. Along with Letlow, Mackenzee Ryan hit double figures for the Capers with 16 points, while fashioning a double-double with 10 assists. Marley Curwin and Kylee Speedy led the Reds with 15 and 12 points, respectively. 

The Reds bounced back Saturday, earning an 80-71 victory over the StFX X-Women. Katie Butts had a double-double night for the Reds with 20 points and 10 rebounds and picked up Subway player of the game honours. Kylee Speedy finished with 18 points, all from beyond the three-point arc, and Jayda Veinot netted 17 and added six rebounds and four steals on the night. Aliyah Fraser was the leading scorer in the game, draining 23 points for the X-Women and earning player of the game honours for her squad.
