Huskies earn fourth-straight win

In the third week of AUS women's basketball action, the Saint Mary's Huskies earned their fourth-straight win with back-to-back victories over the UNB Reds, handing them their first losses of the season. 

Saint Mary's guard Sophia Widmeyer, racked up a game-high 37 points to lead the Huskies to a thrilling 85-84 overtime win over the #7 ranked UNB Reds Friday night at the Homburg Centre in Halifax. Alaina McMillan added 19 points for the Huskies, scoring nine in the fourth quarter and overtime, while Lucina Beaumont chipped in nine points and seven boards. The Reds were led by guards Kylee Speedy with 21 points off the bench, and Jayda Veinot with 18 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Saturday night, nine different Huskies scored as Saint Mary's defeated the Reds 82-77. For the second night in a row, Sophia Widmeyer led the Huskies in scoring with 19 points, including a perfect 11/11 from the free-throw line, and added five rebounds and three assists. Alaina McMillan added 18 points including 8/8 from the free-throw line, and the Huskies shot 93% (25/27) as a team from the charity stripe. The Reds were led by Jayda Veinot with a season-high 28 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Katie Butts added 15 points and six rebounds, while Kylee Speedy chipped in 12 points off the bench.

The Huskies now hold a 5-1 record on the season.

The Acadia Axewomen also sit with a 5-1 record on the season as they split their weekend games with the Cape Breton Capers, ending their five-game winning streak.

Subway Player of the Game Sandy Saunders led the Axewomen to an 87-66 win over the Capers in Wolfville Friday. Saunders tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Haley McDonald scored a team-high 20 points for Acadia, while Elisabeth Iseyemi posted 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Axewomen. Cape Breton's Player of the Game, MacKenzee Ryan, led the Capers scoring 18 points as well as grabbing four rebounds, while Kiyara Letlow added 23 points and 16 rebounds with a commanding presence under the rim.

The Capers bounced back Saturday, handing the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked Acadia Axewomen their first loss of the season with a final score of 80–70. Subway Player of the Game MacKenzee Ryan led the Capers with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists, while Acadia's Elizabeth Iseyemi scored a game-high 21 points, along with adding six rebounds in the loss.

The UPEI Panthers swept their weekend series against the StFX X-Women, first picking up a 73-59 victory in Charlottetown Friday evening. Lauren Rainford scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the third and led the charge down the stretch. She was one of three Panthers to finish in double figures, which included Karla Yepez, who finished with 17 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, and Alicia Bowering with 14 points. StFX's Ekaterina Karchevskaya (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Melina Collins (15 points and 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles in the loss, while Aliyah Fraser had a team-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the three-point line. 

Saturday, the Panthers earned their fourth victory at home as they edged the X-Women 85-63. Lauren Rainford was a big reason why, as the third-year guard scored 27 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. Rainford's older sister Aiden Rainford had her best game as a Panther, scoring 17 points to go along with eight rebounds. Alicia Bowering also finished in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, while Karla Yepez had 10 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Aliyah Fraser scored a team-high 18 points in the loss, while teammates Collins and Ekaterina Karchevska also finished in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively. 

The Memorial Sea-Hawks also earned a weekend sweep, playing to back-to-back wins over the visiting Dalhousie Tigers. The Sea-Hawks dominated the Tigers Saturday night with a 72-45 victory. Sea-Hawks top scoring threat Alana Short was dominant on the offensive end, posting a game-high 19 points, to go along with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Helping the Sea-Hawks to victory were two key pieces off the bench, Emma Power and Alyssa Jenkins. Power added 11 points while Jenkins added a crucial 12 points to the Sea-Hawks cause. On the Tigers side Anna Parsons was the catalyst for the visitors, finishing with a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Adding to the Tigers cause was Mercy Olugu and her seven points and seven rebounds.

Sunday afternoon, Memorial got out of the gates quickly and didn't look back, defeating the Tigers by a final score of 65-43. Alana Short once again led the Sea-Hawks in points with 18 on 4/13 shooting from the field and 2/8 from 3-pt range. Alyssa Jenkins brought crucial production from the bench, scoring 10 points on efficient 3/4 shooting from the field, good enough to be awarded the Subway AUS Player of the Game. Kelsey Crocker led the way for the Tigers, scoring a team-high 15 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Off the bench Katie Wuotila impressed for the visitors, recording 6 points in just 13 minutes of play.
