Reds and Axewomen remain undefeated in women's basketball action

After two weeks of play in the AUS women's basketball regular season, the UNB Reds and Acadia Axewomen have both earned four straight wins to remain undefeated.

UNB hosted the Memorial Sea-Hawks in back-to-back games in Fredericton this weekend, first handing the Sea-Hawks an 86-60 loss Saturday night. Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, NS) led the Reds with 14 points, while Kylee Speedy scored 13 off the bench. Marley Curwin scored eight points, grabbed four steals, and had seven assists for the Reds, earning Subway Player of the Game honours. Alana Short scored a game-high 20 points in Memorial's losing cause.

Sunday afternoon, the Reds scored a 73-61 win over the Sea-Hawks at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center. Kylee Speedy led the Reds, scoring 16 points, while Curwin finished the day with 12 points for UNB. Jayda Veinot and Katie Butts each had 10 points for UNB in the win, while Short led the Sea-Hawks with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Axewomen started the weekend off with a 63-55 win over the UPEI Panthers in Wolfville. Prior to the start of the game, Lizzie Iseyemi was presented with the Bev Greenlaw Basketball award. Iseyemi also earned the title of Subway Player of the Game, posting an impressive stat line of 12 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. UPEI's Lauren Rainford led the way with 23 points and 8 rebounds.

The Axewomen got the win over the UPEI Panthers 88-69 on Sunday afternoon at Stu Aberdeen Court to sweep the weekend match-up against the Panthers. Acadia's Haley McDonald was named The Subway Player of the Game. McDonald scored 36 points (12-15 from the floor, 8-9 from three) to go along with 4 rebounds in just 26 minutes of play. For the Panthers, Karla Yepez netted a team-high 15 points along with 8 rebounds.

The Saint Mary's Huskies swept their weekend games against the Dalhousie Tigers, first playing to a 75-42 victory Thursday evening. Saint Mary's forward Marlo Steenbakkers was awarded Subway Player of the Game honours and impressed on both ends of the count with 10 points, five rebounds, three blocks and one assist. Alaina McMillan added 13 points and three assists, while Courtney Donaldson contributed 12 points off the bench. Kelsey Crocker led the Tigers with 12 points and four rebounds, while forward Anna Parsons scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, one block and one steal.

Saturday night, the Huskies topped the Tigers 94-67 in a fast-paced victory. Saint Mary's Sophia Widmeyer was named the Subway Player of the Game thanks to a game-high 19 points, as well as five rebounds, one assist, and four three-pointers made. Katie Crombeen had 15 points, four rebounds and an assist to lead the way for the Tigers.

The Cape Breton Capers swept their weekend series against the StFX X-Women, earning their first win of the season Friday night with a 106-71 victory in Sydney. Mackenzee Ryan and Kiyara Letlow topped the Capers with a game-high 18 points apiece, while the sophomore forward fashioned a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. Ryan also contributed six assists and three rebounds. Melina Collins led the X-Women with 15 points, including five hoops from downtown, while Karchevskaya chipped in 12 and Upham added 11. 

Sunday afternoon, Subway Player of the Game, Capers forward Kiyara Letlow earned a double-double mid-way through the second quarter to lead Cape Breton to a 97-78 victory. Letlow finished with 32 points and 16 rebounds. Mackenzee Ryan also had a strong game, dropping 29 points and going 4-7 from three-point land, while teammate Hailey Macleod chipped in 12 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. For the X-Women, Ekaterina Karchevskaya was the player of the game, netting 21 points and four rebounds. Aliyah Fraser had 20 points while shooting 3-4 from behind the arc, and Kira Atherly scored 10 points along with adding four boards.
