(SYDNEY, N.S.) The undefeated Cape Breton Capers continued their dominance of the AUS with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over StFX to win their fourth straight conference title.
The Capers scored both goals in overtime as the X-Men defended well the whole game.
Cape Breton had possession of the ball almost the entire night as StFX chose to play a very defensive system against the highest-scoring team in the AUS.
StFX's backline cleared ball after ball all game. Josh Read (Bath, United Kingdom) was especially effective stopping numerous Capers scoring chances.
Keeper Seamus MacDonald (Antigonish, N.S.) also made several dazzling saves to keep the game scoreless through 90 minutes.
The Capers also played stellar defence and didn't allow a single shot on goal.
Peter Schaale (Bernkastel-Keus, Germany) and Euan Bauld (East Lothian, United Kingdom) formed a dynamic pair at the back keeping the StFX forwards at bay.
It was Schaale in the 98th minute who broke the deadlock, connecting on a corner kick into the box from Marcus Campanile (Edinburg, United Kingdom).
The goal forced StFX to open up a bit and in the 105th minute, Charlie Waters (Lancashire, United Kingdom) finished a pass from Cory Bent (Preston, United Kingdom) to seal the victory.
Ben Jackson (Bury, United Kingdom) didn't face any shots in the clean sheet victory. MacDonald stopped six of eight in the loss.
Two-time league MVP Schaale was named Subway Player of the Game, while AUS second team all-star Charlie Waters earned championship MVP nods for his role in the tournament.
Read was named player of the game for StFX in the loss.
Both teams will now travel to Montreal for the U SPORTS national championship being hosted by the University of Montreal Nov. 7 to 10.
