(FREDERICTON, N.B.) The UNB REDS scored three goals in the second period and three more in the third in a 7-2 win over the UPEI Panthers in game two of their Bell AUS Men's Hockey Championship semi-final series, Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
UNB now leads the best-of-five series two-games-to-one.
REDS' captain Colton Kammerer scored once and had two assists. He was named the Boston Pizza Player of the Game.
The visitors opened the scoring, taking advantage of a rare UNB miscue.
Just 1:26 in, REDS goalie Remi Delafontaine misplayed the puck, and Panthers forward Simon Hughes was in the right place at the right time, easily slipping the puck into the UNB net for an early 1-0 lead.
UNB responded at the 7:07 mark, with Kammerer finding the net with wrist shot through traffic.
Early in the second period, and just 15 seconds into a powerplay, Gage Heyes ripped a shot past Panthers goalie Jakob Robillard that completed a nifty tic-tac-toe play.
Michael Petizian's third goal of the series made it 3-1 UNB just before the mid-way point of the period.
UPEI's Cole Larkin made the score 3-2 before Camaryn Baber restored UNB's two goal lead at 15:39.
At the 15:50 mark of the second, Petizian was assessed a five-minute penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind.
UNB managed to kill that major penalty, including the last 50 seconds which carried into the final period.
Stuart Rolofs, Leighton Carruthers, and Thomas Larouche, on a penalty shot in the final minute of play, scored for UNB in the third.
Cody Morgan, Jax Dubois, and Justin Nolet, each had two assists in the REDS victory.
Delafontaine made 22 saves on 24 shots to earn the win in the UNB net. Robillard, tagged with the loss, faced 27 shots, stopping 20.
The series now shifts to Charlottetown for game three, and four if necessary.
Game three is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:00pm.
