Reds skate to sixth straight victory

The UNB Reds skated to their sixth straight victory in Week 5 of AUS men's hockey action, improving to a 7-2 record on the season to sit atop the standings.

The Reds kicked off the week hosting the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in Fredericton, where UNB earned a huge 8-2 win over the visitors. Brady Gilmour had four assists to lead the Reds, while Austen Keating and Simon Pinard each scored twice and added an assist. Other UNB goals came from Cole MacKay, Adam McCormick, Justin Nolet and Michael Petizian, while Thomas Cusson and Vincent Deslauriers (PP) found the back of the net for Moncton in the loss. UNB's Gilmour was named Subway Player of the Game.

UNB then edged the UPEI Panthers 3-1 in Charlottetown Friday night. Keating, Pinard and Isaac Nurse all recorded tallies for the Reds in the win, while Kyle Maksimovich scored the lone goal for UPEI.

The StFX X-Men earned back-to-back victories this weekend to record four points. StFX forward Matthew Struthers scored a first-period natural hat-trick, leading the X-Men to a 7-3 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax on Friday night. Struthers was named Subway Player of the Game, while teammates Liam Hawel, Jacob Hudson and Zack Trott also recorded three-point nights, each with one goal and two assists. StFX's Roddie Sandilands also recorded a tally in the win, while Bradey Johnson, Cedric Ralph and Charlie Dafonseca all found the back of the net for Saint Mary's.

The X-Men then doubled the Acadia Axemen Saturday night as penalty trouble hurt the Axemen's chance at a win as StFX capitalized on two power-plays to earn the 4-2 victory. Subway Player of the Game Jacob Hudson scored the game-winning goal and added a pair of assists for StFX. Josh Nelson found the back of the net twice in the win, with Hawel adding his second goal of the weekend on the empty net. Acadia goals in the loss came from Adam McMaster and Corson Hopwo (PP).

The Axemen split their weekend games, edging the Dalhousie Tigers 5-2 in Wolfville Friday night. Four Axemen players scored their first goal of the season, including rookies Corson Hopwo and Brendan Sellan, who scored two on the night. Keegan Stevenson and Reilly Webb also recorded tallies for the home team, while Logan Johnston and Jarrett Baker both capitalized on powerplays for Dalhousie in the loss. Acadia goalie Conor McCollum turned aside 16 of the 18 shots he faced on the night, while Hicks stopped 38 of 43 shots.

The Panthers and Huskies also split their weekend games, both earning victories Saturday night.

UPEI visited the Aigles Bleus in Moncton Saturday, where they edged the home team 2-1. Olivier-Luc Hache opened the scoring for the Aigles Bleus with his third goal of the season in the first period. The Panthers bounced back with two second-period goals by Drake Pilon and Matt Brassard. After a scoreless third, the Panthers held on for the victory, with Matt Brassard being named the Subway Player of the Game for his game-winning goal.
