X-Men clinch playoff berth with 4-point victory

In Week 9 of AUS men's basketball action, the U SPORTS #7 ranked StFX X-Men edged the Saint Mary's Huskies to earn four points and clinch a playoff position.

The X-Men played to a 91-73 win Saturday night in Halifax, extending their conference-leading record to 13-3 on the season. StFX forward David Muenkat was named Subway Player of the Game with a team-high 19 points, adding eight rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist. Deon Ejim chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds, Dondre Reddick dropped 14 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists, and guard Avan Nava scored 13 points to round out the X-Men in double figures. The Huskies were led by Shae Linton-Brown with 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals, and Dontae Mitchell with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Cape Breton Capers traveled to St. John's this weekend to face the Memorial Sea-Hawks, with eight points up for grabs. Saturday, the home team earned an 89-74 win over the Capers. The Subway Player of the Game for the Sea-Hawks was Flynn-Boardman Raffet, with 19 points, two rebounds and two assists. Emmanuel Ring had a game-high 27 points with nine assists while Boris Ristanovic put up 19 points and seven rebounds. Osman Omar led the Capers with 18 points and six assists, while Chris Ruta (13 points) and Paul Watson (12 points) also scored in double digits.

The Capers bounced back Sunday afternoon to earn a weekend split with the Sea-Hawks, edging the home team 92-81. The Subway Player of the game for the Capers was Osman Omar, with 23 points. Chris Ruta had 28, and Tyson Cato and Justus Peuser both had 12. Nicholas Tuff led the Sea-Hawks with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Boris Ristanovic finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The UNB Reds played in two matchups this weekend, starting with the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown Thursday evening. Down two with four seconds to spare, UPEI's Elijah Miller went up for a three-point shot and was fouled on the attempt. The third-year stepped to the line and calmly connected on all three free throws to give his team a 49-48 victory. Miller finished with a team-high 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Marcus Barnes led the Reds with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Norm Burry had 10 points and 12 rebounds. 

The Reds bounced back Saturday, earning an 88-69 victory over the Acadia Axemen in Wolfville. Norm Burry was named the Subway Player of the Game as he led the Reds in scoring with 15 points, grabbing nine rebounds. Miguel Perez Boskovic shone off the bench for Acadia with a game-high 20 points, shooting 73% from the field and 100% from three.   

The Axemen hosted the Dalhousie Tigers Friday night, with the visitors earning a 95-84 win. Subway Player of the Game Malcolm Christie led the Tigers in scoring, netting 27 points on a scorching 79% from the field and 71% from three. Acadia's player of the game was Alex Muise. Muise posted 24 points along with two steals in the loss.
