Capers and Tigers earn weekend sweeps in men's basketball action

In Week 8 of AUS men's basketball action, the Cape Breton Capers and Dalhousie Tigers both played to back-to-back victories to earn four points apiece.

The Capers defeated the Acadia Axemen 96-79 Friday night at Sullivan Fieldhouse in Sydney. Osman Omar scored a game-high 20 points for the Capers, while Live Kivuvu finished with a career-best 17 points and added nine rebounds. Ryan Munro led five Axemen in double figures, with 18 points, while adding two assists and two rebounds. 

On the strength of a 33-point explosion in the third quarter, the Capers rallied for a 92-80 victory over the Axemen Saturday afternoon. Osman Omar finished with a game-high 26 points, while adding four assists and two steals for the Capers. Omar also made his way into the AUS history books and now sits ninth in career points scored with six games still remaining in the regular season.

Tyson Cato finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Jason Callaghan – off the bench – contributed 17 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Alex Muise led five Axemen in double digits, with 23 points, while adding seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

The Tigers edged the UNB Reds 76-64 at the Dalplex Friday night. Nginyu Ngala was the Tigers top scorer, getting 32 points and 10 rebounds, while also hitting nine three-pointers, breaking the Tigers' record for most three-pointers scored in a single game. This record-breaking performance won him the Subway Player of the Game. The Reds were led by Norm Burry, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds in the loss. 

Saturday night, the Tigers played to another victory, defeating the Reds 72-62. Malcolm Christie ended the night with 30 points and four rebounds for the Tigers, earning Subway Player of the Game honours for his efforts. Marcus Barnes led the Reds in points in the loss with 18, adding two rebounds, five assists and one steal.

In a battle of two of the top teams in the AUS, the U SPORTS No. 6 ranked StFX X-Men hosted the UPEI Panthers in back-to-back games this weekend, with both teams earning a win. Friday night, the X-Men outlasted the Panthers 89-58 en route to their 12th win of the season. For the X-Men, Deon Ejim earned Subway Player of the Game honours with a 21 point, nine-rebound night. Elijah Miller led the Panthers with 13 points, two rebounds, four assists and one steal in the loss.

A strong fourth quarter and shooting 50 percent from the three-point-line helped the Panthers drop the X-Men 76-71 on Coach K Court Saturday afternoon. Panthers guard Elijah Miller picked up Subway player of the game honours, dropping 30 points, including 13 from the free-throw line and nine three-pointers. Isaiah Ankra also had a strong game for UPEI, scoring 18 of his 21 points off the three-ball. Deon Ejim lead the way for StFX, scoring 16 points and picking up five rebounds.

After multiple weather delays over the weekend, the Saint Mary's Huskies and Memorial Sea-Hawks met Monday and Tuesday evening in Halifax. Monday night, Saint Mary's guards Jayrell Diggs and Dontae Mitchell each scored 23 points as the Huskies defeated the Sea-Hawks 98-81. Diggs was named Subway Player of the Game, while Mitchell went 10/13 shooting, and teammate Shae Linton-Brown scored 16 points and added six assists and three steals for the home team. For the Sea-Hawks, Emanuel Ring scored a game-high 29 points, while Boris Ristanovic added 19 and Flynn Boardman-Raffet scored 16.

The Sea-Hawks bounced back Tuesday, earning a 90-73 win over the Huskies. Sea-Hawks Boris Ristanovic was named Subway Player of the Game with a 16 point, 16 rebound double-double, and adding two blocks and two assists. AUS leading scorer Emanuel Ring scored 22 points including a perfect 10/10 from the free-throw line, while Flynn Boardman-Raffett (14 points, 13 rebounds), Nicholas Tuff (12 points, eight rebounds) and Jodick Moudiandambu (14 points) also scored in double-figures for the Sea-Hawks. The Huskies were led by guards Dontae Mitchell with 20 points, Shae Linton-Brown with 15, and Jayrell Diggs with 12.
