(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The UNB Varsity Reds men's basketball team bested the Memorial Sea-Hawks 85-66 in their second last game of the AUS regular season, in front of a crowd of 750 people at the Richard J. Currie Center.
The first-place ranked UNB Varsity Reds began the game with a burst of energy. UNB took the first six points with some hard-earned steals and turnovers created by CIS leading scorer Javon Masters (Kitchener, Ont.) and Matt Daley (Belledune, N.B.).
The Sea-Hawks answered back and narrowed UNB's lead to trail closely throughout the first and second quarter with close scores of 20-15 and 37-33 respectively.
The Varsity Reds finished the third quarter leading MUN 58-52 on the strength of UNB's Will McFee (Northbridge, Australia) who had 13 points in the third quarter alone.
UNB finished off the game with a strong fourth quarter, winning the game by 19 points.
Memorial's Noel Moffat (St. John's, N.L.) was strong for the Sea-Hawks, posting 21 points and 12 rebounds.
UNB took time before the start of the game to recognize their graduating players: Ryan Smith (Dalhousie, N.B.), Will McFee and Jordan Irvine (Riceville, N.B.). Smith had 12 rebounds in this game and Irvine chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
Subway player of the game honours were awarded to UNB's McFee, who played with great energy and scored 25 points.
The Varsity Reds play next when they host the Sea-Hawks Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. in their final game of the regular season.
