Sydney, N.S. – The Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers (1-0-0) kicked off the 2021 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s soccer regular season with a convincing home win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies (0-0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the CBHRC Field on the CBU campus.

Sydney, N.S. – The Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers (1-0-0) kicked off the 2021 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women's soccer regular season with a convincing home win over the Saint Mary's Huskies (0-0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the CBHRC Field on the CBU campus.
In the opening minutes of the match, the visitors started strongly – pressuring the Capers in their zone, but they could not generate any scoring opportunities against keeper Haley Kardas (Halifax, N.S.).
CBU opened the scoring in the 7th minute, when Emma Clark (Centreville, N.S.) ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that eluded Saint Mary's keeper Grace Morrison (Halifax, N.S.). Subway player of the game Rebecca Lambke (Antigonish, N.S.) started the scoring play with a nifty corner kick.
Lambke doubled the Caper advantage (2-0) at the 13-minute mark when her corner kick found the back of the net off the fingertips of Morrison.
Allie Rowe (Kitchener, ON) – on a set-up from Victoria Miller (Ottawa, ON) – scored her first of back-to-back goals to make it 3-0 less than two minutes later.
In the 23rd minute, the Rowe-Miller combo struck again to extend the CBU edge to 4-0.
Ally Wilton (Bedford, N.S.) scored the fifth consecutive Caper marker of the first half in the 33rd minute.
In the final couple minutes before halftime, Jenna Lileikis (Calgary, AB) cut the deficit to 5-1, when her twisting left-footed ball eluded Kardas.
The offensive barrage continued for the Capers in the second half, with the MacPherson sisters (Lingan, N.S.) – Chloe setting up Caleigh – to make it 6-1.
After a great run by Fatou Ndiaye (Pierrefonds, QC), Erin Freeman (Halifax, N.S.) deposited a rebound to round out the scoring for the Capers.
In the final seconds of stoppage time, the Huskies made it 7-2 on a goal from Anna Erikson (Invermere, BC).
The Capers finished with 16 shots on goal, while the Huskies could garner only three.
The Huskies will return to action Sunday, Sept. 12, when they face the STFX X-Women at StFX Stadium in Antigonish, while the Capers will be back on the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 18, against the UNB Reds at Willie O'Ree Place Complex in Fredericton.
Kick-off for both matches is 1 p.m.
