Huskies win home opener 6-2 over REDS

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forwards Jillian Duggan, Charlotte Buffie and Avery Cant combined for three goals and eight assists, leading the Huskies to a 6-2 win over the UNB REDS on Saturday afternoon, in front of 213 fans at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

As part of Huskies Homecoming weekend and the 50th Anniversary of Women in Varsity Sport at Saint Mary's, a pre-game ceremony was held commemorating former Huskies Courtney Schriver-Richard (BA'11) and Kori Cheverie (BA'12) with their jerseys being displayed on the Huskies Hockey Wall of Fame.

The Huskies got off to a strong start early, recording the first six shots on goal, but were unable to beat veteran REDS goaltender Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB).Midway through the period, the Huskies got a powerplay opportunity and took advantage, as first year forward Ava Shearer (Windsor, NS) cycled the puck to linemate Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) who fired a quick shot past McCallum to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead, 11:47 into the first period.

The REDS were able to equalize in the dying moments of the first period, with forward Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) skating down the right wing and attempting a centering pass that went off a defenders stick and past Huskies goaltender Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB), tying the game at 1-1 with just six seconds remaining in the period.

The Huskies outshot the REDS 11-3 in the first period, but the teams went into intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

Four minutes into the second period the Huskies would restore their lead, as forward Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON) skated down the right wing and patiently played a pass around a sliding defender onto the stick of Duggan, who scored her second goal of the day to put the Huskies ahead 2-1, 4:20 into the second.

The REDS were motivated to equalize, firing a barrage of shots towards the Huskies goal, but Ridleigh Hansen was sharp, making 15 saves in the period.

But the visitors were able to equalize on a powerplay, after Hansen made a great initial save on forward Hillary Wood (Miramichi, NB), the rebound found its way to Katelyn Scott who fired a wicked shot over Hansen's glove to tie it up at 2-2, 12:35 into the second period.

Saint Mary's took another powerplay and the REDS were threatening, but a determined forecheck from forwards Mackenzie Beggs (Kemptville, ON) and Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS) paid off with Beggs scoring a shorthanded goal to put the Huskies ahead 3-2, 15:24 into the period.

The REDS outshot the Huskies 16-7 in the second period, taking a 19-18 lead in the game, but it was the Huskies who took a 3-2 lead into second intermission.

The fans in attendance were treated to a Saint Mary's offensive explosion in the third period, with Saint Mary's adding three goals to their tally.

First it was a powerplay goal from forward Avery Cant, who took a pass from Charlotte Buffie and skated in from the point, firing a low shot blocker side on McCallum to make it 4-2, 9:04 into the period.

Just over two minutes later, the Huskies were on another powerplay when Cant found first year forward Ava Shearer (Windsor, NS) in front, who deflected it past McCallum for her first AUS regular season goal, extending the lead to 5-2, 11:37 into the period.

In the final moment, forward Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) added an empty net goal, her second tally of the season, securing the 6-2 Huskies victory.

Huskies forward Jillian Duggan was named Player of the Game with two goals and an assist. Forwards Charlotte Buffie (four assists) and Avery Cant (one goal, three assists) each contributed four points.

"It's exhilarating, it's so much fun to win with these girls," said Duggan post-game. "It's so awesome to see all the alumni who came out to support us, and it felt really great to get the win for them in our home-opener."
