McMillan scores 1000th career point, leads Huskies to 72-64 win over Sea-Hawks
HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's guard Alaina McMillan scored 24 points, including the 1000th point of her Atlantic University Sport regular season career, as the Huskies defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 72-64 on Tuesday afternoon at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.
The Sea-Hawks got off to an early lead, with a lay-up by guard Inés Salat Margarit (Barcelona, Spain) putting the visitors up 6-0. The Huskies offence sputtered in the first quarter, shooting just 4/17 from the field, but a late lay-in by Katelyn Power (Bayside, NS) cut the Sea-Hawks lead to 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The two teams continued to exchange baskets through the first three minutes of the second quarter, with Huskies guard Courtney Donaldson (Kelowna, BC), providing a spark off the bench.

The Sea-Hawks were leading 20-17 when the Huskies started raining threes, as guards Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, NS), Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) and forward Marlo Steenbakkers hit three consecutive shots to take the lead back 26-20. McMillan's second three of the quarter put the Huskies up 33-31 at the half.
The Huskies were led in the first half by McMillan's 11 points, while Sea-Hawks star guard Alana Short (Barrie, ON) dropped 10 for the visitors.
McMillan's long-range attack continued in the third quarter, as she connected on two more three-pointers. But Short answered her shot-for-shot, with her late three-pointer putting the Sea-Hawks up 54-49 heading into the fourth quarter.

It took just over a minute into the fourth quarter for the Huskies to take the lead, after a three-pointer by Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB), followed by a steal and score by Katelyn Power to put the Huskies up 55-54, and the Sea-Hawks wouldn't lead again in the game.

The Huskies outscored the Sea-Hawks 23-10 in the final frame, and it was appropriate that McMillan had a couple of huge plays late to secure the victory – a reverse lay-in for her 1000th career regular season point, followed by a deep three to extend the lead to 70-59.

Alaina McMillan was named Subway Player of the Game with a season-high 24 points, including six three's. The fourth year guard now sits at 9th all-time in Saint Mary's career scoring, with 1003 points in 70 regular season games. Lucina Beaumont chipped in nine points for the Huskies, and Katelyn Power added eight points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench.
The Sea-Hawks were once again led by Alana Short, who recorded a 22 points, 10 rebound double-double, while guard Rebecka Ekstrom (Stockholm, Sweden) contributed 19.
The Huskies win improved their record to 10-4 on the season, tying them with the Acadia Axewomen with a conference-leading 10 wins and 24 points (Axewomen hold the tie-breaker). The Huskies will be back on home-court on Saturday night, as the host the St. FX X-Women in a crucial four-point game, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Homburg Centre. GET TICKETS
The Sea-Hawks second straight loss dropped their record to 7-5 on the campaign. They too will be back on home-court this weekend, hosting the Cape Breton Capers for a pair of four-point games, Saturday at 6 p.m. NST and Sunday at 12 p.m. NST.
