Reds Ride 2nd Period to 5-2 Victory

There's no better home opener than the battle of the hill. The Saint Thomas University Tommies were set to face off against the University of New Brunswick Reds at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

These two have had a close rivalry with both teams looking to take the season lead against each other.

The first period started off hot, with a great tip-in goal by Sage McElroy-Scott (Morden, MB) for the Reds, giving them a lead early on.

Even though they were down by one early, the Tommies battled back and managed to find the back of the net, with a beautiful cross crease goal scored by Olivia Reid, (Aurora, ON).

The first period would go on to have many chances on both ends of the ice, but leaving the game tied 1-1 after the first twenty minutes.

The second period was filled with a fleury of goals for the Reds. The first being a red-hot snipe by McElroy-Scott with her second of the night. With that the Reds took the lead 2-1 but didn't stop there. Payton Hargreaves (Whitby, ON) would set her sights on the top shelf with a snipe from the hashmarks, increasing their lead 3-1.

The Tommies would go on to struggle in their own end allowing two more goals in the second half of the period; giving them a mountain to climb as they end the second period down 5-1.

The third started much better for the Tommies as they brought the game to the Reds. The Reds would defend well and keep the Tommies scoreless until halfway through the period.

Emma Wilson (Midhurst, ON) would give the Tommies their second goal of the game but it came too little too late.

"Definitely not our best game, that was apparent, we just need to play a consistent three periods, and if we play our game all three periods, we should be able to get them," said Tommies' captain, Alexandra Woods (Courtice, ON).

"It comes down to burying our chances and then also making sure we're keeping our habits straight with the things we want to do on a consistent basis," said Tommies' head coach, Peter Murphy.

You can catch the next Tommies' game on Friday, October 15^th, when they visit the Dalhousie University Tigers, while the Reds will get the Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax that same night.
