Huskies sweep weekend series against Aigles Bleues with four set victory

The Saint Mary's Huskies swept their weekend series against the Moncton Aigles Bleues, by winning in four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16) on Sunday afternoon in Moncton, N.B.

While the Aigles Bleues were largely led at the beginning of the first set with a score of 18 to 4, they still managed to catch up without being able to regain the advantage. The Huskies ended up winning the first set by a score of 25-17, led by three kills from outside hitter Olivia Bell (Lahave, NS).

Throughout the second set, the two teams were neck and neck, with the Aigles Bleues able to secure a 25-22 win to tie the match at one set each.  

In the third set, the Aigles Bleues got off to an early 13-10 lead, but the Huskies were able to battle back thanks to some strong play by Bell and Megan Bruhm (Hubley, NS), and middle Alena Piatukhova (Minsk, Belarus) finished off the set with a kill, giving the Huskies the 25-22 win and a two-set-to-one advantage.

In the fourth set, the Huskies got off to a quick 12-3 lead, thanks in part to three service aces from Bruhm, and never looked back, taking the decisive fourth set by a score of 25-17 to win the match three-sets-to-one.

Huskies outside hitter Megan Bruhm (Hubley, NS) was named Subway Player of the Game with 11 kills, 14 digs and three service aces. Emilia Mikanovich (Minsk, Belarus) chipped in 13 kills and 28 digs, while Olivia Bell added 12 kills, 19 digs and four service aces and setter Taylor Lougheed (Calgary, AB) led all players with 42 assists. 

The Aigles Bleues were led by Gabrielle Leclair with 12 kills, 14 digs and three service aces, and setter Emilie-Anne Chiasson chipped in 25 assists and eight digs.

The Huskies win improves their record to 8-4 on the season. They'll be back in action next weekend, taking on cross-town rivals the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Dalplex.

The Aigles Bleues loss drops their record to 2-10 on the season. They'll be on the next week, taking on the Acadia Axewomen on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in Wolfville, N.S.
